When we talk about powerhouse women in leadership, we are often talking about women CEOs, executives, and high-achieving, highly ambitious entrepreneurs, but being a powerhouse female leader doesn’t stop there! Over the last several decades, there have been a few brave women stepping up their leadership game - all the way to the White House.

I’m talking about the Kamala Harris’s, the Maxine Waters’, the Hillary Clinton’s, and the Elizabeth May’s of the world. Those women that are making a significant impact on the world; bringing to reality their vision of how the world should be.

My guest today is Mayor of Moncton, Dawn Arnold. Dawn shares why it’s so important for women to get their political voices heard, shares her experiences with running for office, and shares how she overcame her personal fears about campaigning. She explains how she developed the thick skin required to lead a political campaign and how her experiences can help you become a more fierce feminine leader.

“Change the game. Don’t let the game change you.” - Mayor Dawn Arnold

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • Why she decided to run for mayor of Moncton
  • Overcoming political campaigning challenges
  • How running for office impacts the entire family
  • Staying resilient during good and bad events and experiences
  • Owning your strengths and skills
  • Barriers preventing women to run for political offices
  • Bringing diverse groups with differing views together
  • How to be more comfortable with being more visible

Mayor Dawn Arnold’s Top 3 Success Strategies:

  1. Know your strengths and values - and own them.
  2. Be resilient and okay with taking ‘no’ for an answer.
  3. Take nothing personally.

Shelli Varela is a “possibility hacker,” public speaker, and Canada’s first female firefighter in one of the largest cities in the country. She went from being a young 20-something struggling artist working in makeup, film, and special effects to finding her true passion, her true calling, as a firefighter, working her way up to Fire Captain.

Shelli joins me today to share her “lightbulb moment” - the moment she decided to follow her passion and dream of becoming a firefighter. She shares how she used anger and her hyperactive imagination to help her accomplish her goals and her strategies for breaking down her big, audacious goals into bite-size pieces. She also explains the importance of giving yourself permission to explore your interests and passions and why it’s important to lead with possibility.

“The universe really does conspire to help you achieve your dreams, goals, and purpose if you allow it to do so.” - Shelli Varela

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • Using anger to motivate you to achieve your goals and dreams
  • The importance of staying emotionally and mentally engaged
  • Visualizing and feeling yourself achieving your goals - even before you actually achieve them

  • How identifying what you want to feel can set you on the path toward your “value currency”
  • Leading with possibility
  • The importance of applying grit to the goals and dreams you want to achieve

Setting boundaries are crucial to your overall success as an entrepreneur or business leader, but many people - especially women - significantly struggle with setting boundaries and sticking to them. For generations, women have been taught to put the needs of others ahead of their own; to be “people pleasers.”

However, in order to achieve your goals and dreams, you must be willing to set boundaries and say no to others so that you can focus on achieving your mission.

Today, I’m explaining what a boundary is and why setting strong ones are essential to helping you achieve your goals and reach your potential. I’m also providing you with three strategies on how to set strong boundaries that will help you achieve your goals.

“As you grow, your boundaries need to change.” - Eleanor Beaton

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • How sharing your boundaries allows you to be truly generous
  • The importance of recognizing and addressing your “people pleasing” habits
  • The connection between your energy level and setting strong boundaries
  • Overcoming unpleasant feelings that may be associated with saying no to others
  • Strategies on how to start implementing stronger boundaries

5 Signs You Need Better Boundaries:

  1. Overcommitting
  2. Over-promising
  3. Feeling exhausted
  4. Second guessing yourself
  5. Resentment

Many different factors come into play when you launch a new business. From figuring out your marketing strategy and identifying your ideal clients to creating proposals, attending networking events, and staying current on your education and certification courses, there are many things you need to consider to make a successful impact in your industry.

One of the most critical factors that many new entrepreneurs often overlook is their message. Your message, and the way you deliver it, can be the determining factor that makes a client or organization decide whether to work with you.

On today’s episode, I want to share four easy steps you can take to create a powerful message for your business and help you overcome the “boring message syndrome” that often plagues many fierce feminine leaders and entrepreneurs.

“Great leaders - women of influence - are storytellers and excellent communicators.” - Eleanor Beaton

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • How to identify if you have “boring message syndrome”
  • How to elegantly and persuasively get people to hear your message
  • Creating a compelling argument
  • Using case studies to tell a story and support a controlling idea
  • Showing what is possible by implementing ideas, methods, or messages

4 Parts of Complete and Persuasive Messages:

  1. Your controlling idea
  2. The details
  3. The stories
  4. The promise

What does playing big in your business or career mean to you? For some, it may mean swallowing your fear and starting a new business or accepting – or declining – a promotion. My guest today is women’s leadership expert, Tara Mohr. She is a passionate coach, speaker, and the creator of the Playing Big Leadership Program, which has gained recognition by many major media publications including Oprah.com, Fast Company, TEDx Women, The New York Times, and Time Magazine.

Tara joins me today to share her story, what inspired her to empower women to play a bigger game, and what motivated her to publish her book, Playing Big: Practical Wisdom for Women Who Want to Speak Up, Create, and Lead. She shares her insight on what causes women to play small, how to overcome those fears to achieve the success they deserve, and the inner work necessary for women to play a bigger game.

“Playing big is being more loyal to your dreams than your fears.” – Tara Mohr

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • Common signs and expressions of playing small

Tara’s Tips to Play a Bigger Game:

I’m delighted to be podcasting from beautiful London England where I’m having a wonderful time doing business, visiting my family, and speaking at a conference for entrepreneurs where the topic of income generation came up. We hear the call and we become business women, but when it comes to monetizing I notice that many women entrepreneurs feel guilty about making money. The subjects of helping women become fierce successful financial leaders and overcoming money blocks are subjects I have a deep fascination in.

Do learned money rules or stories affect how you deal with finances? I come from a long line of economists and economizers and I learned a great deal from my parents who were trying to build a future with what little income they brought in. I was taught early on that there was a scarcity of money or that it would be here today and gone tomorrow so I learned that waste not want not was a valid money rule, but I also learned to be uncomfortable around money.

On today’s episode, I’m going to share with you how learned money rules create blocks that interfere with your business success and your joy, and I talk about helping you break the chains holding you back from true financial freedom.

Here’s a Breakdown of Today’s Show:

  1. How economizing and economy affected me as a young girl.
  2. How your money story will catch up to you in business.
  3. Common money blocks that hold you back.
  4. I share about how money blocks surfaced when I started my business.
  5. How I help you change your mindset so you can embrace money.

My Challenge to You:

  • Reflect on your money stories and how they have affected you in your personal and business life and download your free Monthly Cash Calculator.
  • Give back to others and be a part of transforming the world into a softer, kinder, and nurturing place.

All of us have dreams. Some dream of pursuing their dream career or profession while others dream of making a great name for themselves in business. Whichever dream you might have, one thing is for certain: You have to invest in yourself and trust me when I say your future self will thank you if you start now.

Here’s a Breakdown of Today’s Show:

  • Imagine your dreams and goals to be like a small baby. In order for babies to grow healthy and strong, you have to give them all the time and commitment just like your dreams.
  • It’s natural for women in our society to put other people in front of us but now it’s time to focus on you.
  • You won’t be able to grow your dreams if you don’t invest on them or feed it scraps.
  • You have to improve your belief and commitment to your dreams so you can improve your belief and commitment to yourself.
  • Put your money where your mouth is. Invest in your dreams.
  • Do not give up on goals when they get hard. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.
  • Don’t make excuses to put your dreams on hold.
  • Successful companies burn through loads of cash when they’re growing. You yourself can’t grow without spending money.
  • Investing in yourself first is a powerful mindset so invest in you.
  • Investing on something is not the same as doing work to generate the results. You can’t spend your way out of a problem.

My Challenge To You!

Take your dreams and goals seriously. Commit to investing in yourself and in those goals to make them a reality. Get access to the right kind of people who possess the right kind of skills and influences. Give yourself permission to invest in yourself.

According to research, over half of today’s workforce is made up of women professionals, but far less have achieved their goals of landing a top position within their company. Statistics show that by mid-career, these powerful women with leadership potential lose their desire to reach the top midway in their careers.

In this episode, I am going to share with you the top three career derailers that are the most common reasons for great, aspiring women to lose their desire and confidence in landing that top spot.

  1. Broaden Your Career Focus

Women tend to specialize in specific roles within their company. Specializing in a particular field can all too often limit your chances for successfully landing a top position or becoming the company’s next CEO. Ladies, if you want to become an influential woman leader, you need to learn and appreciate how your organization works as a whole, and to do that, you need to start making lateral moves into unknown territory.

Until you learn how your company works as an entity, you won’t be able to lead it.

  1. Become a ‘People Person’ – Learn How to Work with People You Don’t Like

Being a “people person” does not mean that everyone has to like you – or that you have to like everyone. It means that you have successfully mastered the art of communicating and working with people whose personalities may conflict with your own. Mastering this skill is an incredibly important attribute to have when you are trying to land a top seat in your company or organization.

After all, you don’t think Sheryl Sandberg likes everyone she ever worked with at Facebook and Google, do you? Of course not, but by learning how to build solid working relationships with people, it enabled her to become a top women leader.

  1. Take Smart Risks

Being a CEO often involves taking smart risks. If you want to be a CEO of your company, you need to learn how to get out of your comfort zone and make the decision to take a smart risk. Ask for tough assignments, even if they are only short-term projects. Raise your hand at the next meeting and allow your voice and opinions to be heard. Volunteer new ideas to your boss and ask for new and different roles in the company. Some new positions may require you to accept a demotion, but that’s okay! It will only help your career in the long-run.

There are too many women in the workforce playing it safe at work. If you want to be CEO, you cannot be one of them. Get the courage to speak up, take risks, and lead your career YOUR way.

Only you have control over the direction of your career. It’s time to get the courage you need to take action and be the Fierce Feminine Leader we all know you can be!

We all know that feedback is vitally important to our growth as entrepreneurs. Without feedback, how would we know what areas of our business and the way we lead our teams need to be improved upon? Sometimes, though, feedback can be hard to accept. Sometimes, well-intentioned people in our lives give us feedback that may not be helpful in advancing us toward the next level of success we want to achieve in our lives, businesses, or careers.

On today’s episode, I’m sharing 5 powerful tips on getting the candid feedback you need to advance in your business and career. I’m also sharing a few key strategies that I use to help me decipher whether a piece of feedback that I receive is truly feedback or merely a statement of judgement as well as how I handle the judgmental “haters” that provide unconstructive feedback.

“Attitude, moodiness, and defensiveness are the surest ways to have people stop bringing you feedback and begin writing you off.”

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • The relationship between gender bias and the lack of feedback among female professionals
  • Getting used to receiving and asking for blunt, harsh feedback
  • How to identify and handle unconstructive criticism

3 Ways to Handle Unconstructive Criticism:

  1. Remember Oprah’s phrase: “People will support you until you exceed their expectations of you.”
  2. Allow yourself to get angry. It’s okay to rant and vent a little!
  3. Identify if there is a lesson you can take from the feedback. If so, take the lesson. If not, discard the feedback and move on.

Every day, we hear from women with incredible dreams. Dreams of achieving big things, big goals. Dreams of making an impact and connecting with thousands of people. The dream of doing more and making an impact on the world around you is a huge endeavor!

But what does it really take to achieve these big goals? What does it take to become the CEO of your company or to grow your business and become a speaker? What does it take to become one of the top 4-percent of powerhouse women leaders?

Last week, I was honored to share the stage with several powerhouse speakers, including Hillary Clinton and Rosario Dawson, at the Professional Business Women Association of California’s annual conference to talk about how the top 4-percent of women think. Today, I want to share with you some of the insight I have learned throughout my career of what it really takes to achieve the big goals in your professional career.

“The scope of your goals are in direct proportion to your willingness to do what is required to reach those goals.”

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • The missing piece of the equation preventing you from achieving your big goals and dreams.
  • Determining your willingness to achieve your goals.
  • The qualities that the top 4-percent of women leaders have that allow them to achieve their goals.

4 Qualities of the Top 4% of Women Leaders:

  1. Intentional
  2. Commitment
  3. Willing to do the work
  4. Willing to make sacrifices

My Challenge to You:

  • Think about the goal that you say you want.
  • Ask yourself if you would still want that goal if it took three times as long to achieve it
  • Ask yourself if you would still want it if it took three times the sacrifice to achieve it.

Powerful women leaders understand that the single most important thing they can do to up level their careers, businesses and lives is to focus on getting RESULTS. In this episode, Eleanor Beaton shows you one powerful concept you can use each day to radically improve your RESULTS.

Jun 26, 2017

As 2016 comes to a close, many fierce feminine leaders are starting to envision and plan what they want to accomplish in the upcoming year. Developing a strategy and action plan each year is a critical step to propelling your business forward, maintaining your already achieved momentum, and clearing a path so you can find your seat at the big tables.

Today, I want to share with you the types of people you should avoid in 2017. These are people who will inevitably derail your strategy to success, make you feel undervalued, self-conscious, and inhibit your performance.

For every hour you spend with a crazy-maker, you are going to spend about 5 to 10 hours paying for it.

Here’s a Breakdown of Today’s Show:

  • Women who execute well and get stuff done are more successful because they manage their state of mind well.
  • Your ‘state’ – or state of mind – is how you feel, manage, and react to how you are feeling from one moment to the next.
  • Limiting your exposure to negative people – the crazy-makers – will help improve your ‘state’.

5 Common Crazy-Maker Categories to Edit Out of Your Life in 2017:

  1. The ‘Red Alert’ People – Those people who are always afraid, always see pitfalls, dangers or threats and want you to be afraid, too.
  2. The “Undermining’ People – Those who are jealous or feel threatened by what you are doing. The people who make you feel self-conscious about yourself or your work. These people will curb your creativity, effectiveness, and your ability to get things done.
  3. The “Constructive Feedback” People – People who give you ‘constructive feedback’ when you didn’t ask for it – even when they don’t know what they are talking about or their feedback isn’t helpful.
  4. The “It Should Have Happened Yesterday” People – Those who lack the patience or don’t realize that it takes time to execute things properly.
  5. The “Stuck in a Rut” People – The people who have their own problems, but refuse to do their own work to make a change. Those people who talk about the same issues and problems repeatedly without taking action.

My Challenge To You:

Surround yourself with people that have a different opinion than you, but do not to spend too much time with the crazy-makers that will bring you down and derail your progress and success.

Many women struggle with self-confidence and courage – which often prevents them from achieving their true potential. Surrounding yourself with brave, courageous women is critically important as a fierce feminine leader and entrepreneur. It can help you step into your power and bring the best of who you are – unapologetically.

My guest today is powerhouse entrepreneur, Mandy Rennehan. Mandy is a blue-collar CEO and the founder of the retail construction company, FreshCo. FreshCo is the first and most successful full-service on call retail maintenance and construction company in the United States today. Mandy and her company have worked with countless retail giants including Tiffany & Co, Apple, NIKE, The Gap, Banana Republic, and Home Depot.

Mandy has been named as one of Canada’s top female entrepreneurs. Currently, she is one of the Women’s Executive Network’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women, Profit Magazine’s Top W100, and Atlantic Business Magazine’s Top 50 CEO’s. Additionally, she has been featured in the Globe & Mail, Financial Post, and the Business News Network. Today, she joins me to share how her experience as a talented athlete and 4-H member has helped shape who she is today. She also explains the impact that being herself and staying confident in her abilities has helped improve and grow her business to the highly-successful company that it is today.

“Women just need the permission to hear their voice and go after it.” – Mandy Rennehan

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • How she got started in the construction industry
  • How changing the way she sourced people on her team became one of the biggest turning points in her career
  • How being herself helped her grow her business
  • Hiring team members that align with your personality, ambition, and work ethic
  • Making the shift from “do-er” to CEO
  • How confidence led her to winning her first $3-Million contract
  • Others relate to those who are unafraid

3 Critical Factors of Scaling a Business:

  1. Identify when you are ready to grow
  2. Ask yourself: Are you prepared to put time into other people, technology, and the results of growth
  3. Ask yourself: Are you prepared for what might happen

Courage is the fuel behind the fire of achieving major accomplishments for many fierce entrepreneurs. Without courage, it is nearly impossible to live out your purpose and to live a full, complete, and vibrant life. But all too often, we let our self-doubt get inside our head and overpower our courage – preventing us from achieving the amazing success we were destined for.

My guest today is Margie Warrell. Margie has been named by The Wall Street Journal as an international authority on courageous actions. She is the host of Raw Courage TV, an acclaimed keynote speaker and guest lecturer at Columbia and Georgetown Universities, and a certified Master Coach. She is also a highly sought-after expert commentator on several leading media outlets including The Wall Street Journal, Redbook, Psychology Today, Fox News, and the Today Show. Her insights on courage, leadership, and business have been shaped by her work and interviews with several highly-respected industry leaders including Richard Branson, Bill Marriott, and Cathy Calvin.

Margie joins me on the show today to share how courage has played a role in her own life and provide some courage-building tips. She shares her journey into the entrepreneurial world and how she built her incredible global business that has impacted thousands of people around the world.

“When we are comfortable, our muscles for life start to wither.” – Margie Warrell

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • What inspired Margie to become the entrepreneur that she is today
  • How risk held her back early in her career
  • Looking at courage through the lens of risk
  • Listening to your inner voice before the “experts”

Whether we realize it or not, gender stereotypes and gender inequality often starts at an early age. In fact, if you have ever walked into a toy store or children’s clothing store, you may have seen this issue creeping up in the toys and clothes available for our young girls. My guest today is Jodi Bondi Norgaard, and she is on a mission to smash the gender stereotype that is currently trending in the toy industry – particularly with dolls.

Jodi is the founder and former owner of the Dream Big toy company – the company responsible for creating the Go! Go! Sports Girl line of dolls, books, and apps that encourage healthy and active play for girls. Today, she focuses her energy on speaking about issues regarding gender stereotypes, gender equality, and girl empowerment. On today’s episode, Jodi shares her experience and passion for educating others on gender stereotypes, her mission to empower young girls today to achieve their dreams beyond fashion, and shares what lead her to create a business around female empowerment.

“I feel so strongly about women rising to their full potential because we have so much to offer.” – Jodi Bondi Norgaard

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • What inspired her to create a sports doll that encouraged girls to be physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy
  • The “process and puzzle” of starting a doll company
  • How she sold 500 Go! Go! Sports Girl dolls to the U.S. Open – and sold out within six days
  • Her experience with displaying her product at Toy Fair
  • Why she put her mission first – instead of her business revenue and growth

  • The biggest lesson she has learned as an entrepreneur when selling her business
