It’s inauguration week in the United States – the week when the new President of the United States is sworn into the Oval Office. As the soon-to-be former President and First Lady prepare to leave the White House, I think back on the many accomplishments this powerhouse couple have achieved over their 8-year tenure – particularly, Michelle Obama.

Despite whether you agree with her politics, or the politics of President Barak Obama, Michelle Obama’s career is filled with valuable leadership lessons for women in business. Today, I’m going to share with you some of the important lessons I have learned from simply observing how she has lead initiatives – from her work in combatting childhood obesity and supporting veterans to her powerful speeches during the 2011 election. By simply observing her career, we can learn many valuable lessons that can help us be more effective in any negotiation, in any boardroom, or in any speech we give throughout 2017.

 

When you have the room – allow yourself to own it.

My aunt – Linda Davies, former investment banker who moved on to become an internationally best-selling author of financial thrillers for adults and adventure story author for young adults, has been an amazingly Fierce Feminine Leader that I have looked up to as a young adult and entrepreneur. If you’ve listened to the Fierce Feminine Leadership podcast for a while, you may remember my interview with Linda in Episode 29, where she shared her story and we discussed taking risks in your life, your business, and your career.

Aunt Linda has taught me many valuable lessons. One of the most impactful lessons I have learned is how powerful the words I use to describe myself are, and why it’s important to be ruthlessly loving with the words you use to describe yourself.

After graduating from Georgetown University, Brit Marling carved a path to become an investment banker at Goldman Sachs. Welcome to the last episode of the Fierce Feminine Leadership podcast for 2016! As we wrap up the year, I want to discuss an important topic for you to think about as you are planning your 2017 path to success – gender bias. What is gender bias? Is it still alive and well in today’s working world?

Absolutely.

Unfortunately, despite the incredible strides women in business have made over the past several years, gender bias is still a major part of our work, culture, and society. The beast still lives and breathes – it’s just harder to spot.

Today, I’m going to talk about what gender bias looks like in today’s working society, and how, although things are getting better at the middle-management level – top-level positions within many organizations still have plenty of room for improvement.

Over the course of the last several episodes, we have heavily discussed ways to help you take your business and career to the next level in 2017. Today, I want to discuss what the phrase “Work Smarter, Not Harder” really means so that you can plan your upcoming year down the right path toward success.

Working smarter doesn’t necessarily mean focusing exclusively on “doing the work.” Working hard is important, but there are other critical things you should consider and implement to truly make an impact in your community, your business, and your industry.

Today, I’m going to share the top 5 ways that many of the high-level, successful entrepreneurs and thought-leaders that I have worked with over the years have shared with me.

 

Ask yourself where you are in your genius zone.

 

5 Ways to Work Smarter in 2017:

  1. Leverage your competitive advantage – Identify and understand what your competitive advantage is – then leverage it as much as you can with great intention.
  2. Mediocre strategy, brilliant execution – Focus less on the strategy and more on the execution.
  3. Embrace today ­- The hunger to succeed is a good thing – it keeps you motivated to move forward, but it’s also important to remember that it’s okay to embrace the present. View today’s challenges as gifts and the gateway to reaching your next level of success.
  4. Develop your delivery system – Hard work is critical, but it also gets you more hard work. Your delivery mechanism is the basis of building up your pre-eminence and influence within your industry.
  5. Be Courageous – When you hold back information or an idea from other people, you’re being selfish. When you operate from a place of confidence and courage, you will work much smarter.

 

My Challenge to You:

  • Ask yourself: What are you doing that feels easy for you; that is fun for you to do and you can do quickly? What are you good at that people keep asking you about?
  • Stay focused on decent strategies, but move quickly into acting and executing on those strategies.
  • Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
  • Don’t just keep your nose buried in doing the work. Work on building your delivery system.
  • Be courageous and share your ideas.

2016 was truly the year for Beyoncé. After all, who else can drop a music album the day after the Super Bowl without using any type of promotion? Not only that, she also became the first woman in history to chart 12 songs on the Hot 100 billboards at the same time, plus she is the only entertainer to be on the Forbes 50 Most Powerful Women in Business list!

When you look at the thought-leaders, business owners, and entrepreneurs around the world that are making a huge impact on society, you may notice that they all share an uncanny ability to determine what is possible – not just what is logical or realistic. They have the unique ability to distort reality – in the right way. To make a big impact in today’s world – to be creative and innovative – entrepreneurs must be able to “think-outside-the-box.”

A prosperity plan is also known as a cash planner, and you use it to help you track and plan your actual yearly revenue, plan and predict your projected annual revenue, and plan the activities you will need to achieve to help you reach those goals. A good prosperity plan also considers your personal goals, to help you have a sense of work-life balance.

It’s that time of year again! Time for fierce feminine leaders to take a step back and reflect on the year they have had in 2016. Time to make plans for the upcoming 2017 year, envisioning the big goals they want to achieve for their business or career and map out how they want to achieve those goals.

So, over the course of the next few episodes, I want to help you map out your success strategy for 2017 through a few “mini trainings” that will help you make 2017 your best, most productive year ever!

One of the qualities that we consistently see in fierce feminine leaders is courage. As 2016 comes to a close, many fierce feminine leaders are starting to envision and plan what they want to accomplish in the upcoming year. Developing a strategy and action plan each year is a critical step to propelling your business forward, maintaining your already achieved momentum, and clearing a path so you can find your seat at the big tables.

Today, I want to share with you the types of people you should avoid in 2017. These are people who will inevitably derail your strategy to success, make you feel undervalued, self-conscious, and inhibit your performance.

 

For every hour you spend with a crazy-maker, you are going to spend about 5 to 10 hours paying for it.

 

Here’s a Breakdown of Today’s Show:

  • Women who execute well and get stuff done are more successful because they manage their state of mind well.
  • Your ‘state’ – or state of mind – is how you feel, manage, and react to how you are feeling from one moment to the next.
  • Limiting your exposure to negative people – the crazy-makers – will help improve your ‘state’.

 

5 Common Crazy-Maker Categories to Edit Out of Your Life in 2017:

  1. The ‘Red Alert’ People – Those people who are always afraid, always see pitfalls, dangers or threats and want you to be afraid, too.
  2. The “Undermining’ People – Those who are jealous or feel threatened by what you are doing. The people who make you feel self-conscious about yourself or your work. These people will curb your creativity, effectiveness, and your ability to get things done.
  3. The “Constructive Feedback” People – People who give you ‘constructive feedback’ when you didn’t ask for it – even when they don’t know what they are talking about or their feedback isn’t helpful.
  4. The “It Should Have Happened Yesterday” People – Those who lack the patience or don’t realize that it takes time to execute things properly.
  5. The “Stuck in a Rut” People – The people who have their own problems, but refuse to do their own work to make a change. Those people who talk about the same issues and problems repeatedly without taking action.

It’s mid-December and as we prepare for the upcoming holiday season, many of you successful women in business – myself included – are taking a few moments to reflect on what we accomplished throughout the 2016 year. This is the time to think about what worked well, what worked not-so-well, and what we want to do to propel our business into a successful start in 2017.

For my business, 2016 has been an amazing year packed with international traveling, keynote speaking, and running half-day and full-day workshops, and much, much more. My team has been phenomenal in helping me achieve these goals for this year.

But I’m frequently asked, “Eleanor, how do you get so much done?”

My answer to that is: The key ingredient is the ability to implement, execute, and just get things done.

So today, I’m taking a deep dive into exactly what fierce feminine leaders need to do to get things done; to achieve all their goals, aspirations, and yearly objectives and what it takes to really step into your power and take your seat at the big tables.

 

Fierce Feminine Leaders’ Top 10 Tips to Get Things Done:

  1. Protect Your Mental State – Don’t focus on hypothetical problems. Only focus on real
  2. Make Firm Commitments – Instead of talking or thinking about things, commit firmly to them and take action.
  3. Say “No” – A Lot – Your ability to cut off things so you can focus genuinely on a few things that are important to you is critical to your success and getting things done.
  4. Protect Your Mind – Surround yourself with people that are positive, self-aware, and uplifting.
  5. Reflect & Look Back – Take stock of the day – and week – that was. Take notice of the cumulative progress that you have made.
  6. Focus on High-Impact Outcomes – Instead of focusing on the “little projects,” identify the big vision and high-impact initiatives.

In today’s episode, I am joined by the fabulous Australian-based mentor, speaker, and the expert in Wellness Psychology and Human Potential, Suzi Petrozzi. Suzi has worked with thousands of high-achieving, successful women in business around the globe, helping them overcome obstacles and move past crossroads in their lives and careers that are often developed over emotional barriers. Suzi is the founder of an award-winning wellness center – Petrozzi Wellness Center – in Sydney, Australia, which she works alongside her husband, John. Today, I share with you four critical psychological skills that all high-performers must have and master in order to achieve success in life, business, and sports.

  • Think about what would be possible if you could unlock 15% more potential without creating more time in a day or upgrading your skills.

The 4 Critical Psychological Skills of High-Performers:

  1. Focus
  • Focus to work through the whirlwind.
  1. Visualization
  • Visualize the “end game” and what steps you need to take to achieve it.
  1. Setting Effective Goals
  • Drastically narrow your focus down. Set smaller goals to achieve the W.I.G.
  1. Dealing with Distractions
  • Learn how to say a powerful “no” to stay on track with your vision and goals.

When you unlock your capacity by 10, 15, 20 percent – think about what is going to be possible for your family, the people you love, and humanity as a whole.

Do you get frustrated at how long things are taking? Do you think things should be much easier? As a coach, I notice impatience is normal among fierce feminine leaders, so rest assured you’re not alone.  Possessing and bringing a sense of urgency to your business is a positive step but it can go the opposite way where your impatience causes you to resist embracing a high level of performance.

Years ago, I had the opportunity to interview Stanford University psychologist Dr. Carol Dweck who is the author of the book Mindset which is like a bible to me in my coaching practice. Her book pinpoints two type of mindsets, fixed and growth, and how we use these attitudes to either move forward or keep us back from realizing our goals. 

So, on today’s episode, I’ll talk about fixed and growth mindset so you understand what may be keeping you back from your goals. Our attitudes are not set in stone, and many intelligent and competitive women break out of their negative mindsets to achieve success no matter how long it takes.

  • I’ll tell you about what the fixed mindset does that may hold you back in your business or career pursuits.
  • When you’re in a growth mindset, you are open to learning, and there’s no stopping how far you can go to see success.
