Have you ever felt that nagging ball of nerves in the pit of your stomach when you want to ask your boss for a raise, but you’re too nervous to actually confront him and ask for it? Or perhaps you’ve thought about talking to a loyal client about increasing your rates, but have put it off for months because you’re simply not sure about how things will turn out or are simply too nervous to “go for the ask.”

You are not alone. In fact, thousands of high-achieving women would rather make less money or go without things they truly want instead of facing the tense moment of asking their boss, their client or voicing their strong opinion on a situation or topic they feel passionate about.

Today, ladies, I want to share with you a few stories on how not taming the tension can help you grow as a person and a professional and why you should get comfortable with it in your business and your life.

Make tension your best friend.

Tension is like the grit of sand in an oyster shell. When you let it sit, beautiful things can happen. – Eleanor Beaton

Here’s a Breakdown of Today’s Episode:

  • Why is tension a useful tool for personal and professional growth
  • Why women often avoid using tension as a powerful tool to help them achieve the things they deserve.
  • How to use tension to your advantage, in business and life.

Key Areas That Women Often Avoid Tension:

  • Asking for a raise in salary
  • Raising their rates with clients
  • Expressing their disapproval or opinion about a situation, topic, or idea because they don’t want to “rock the boat.”
  • Making a change

My Challenge to You:

  • Don’t be afraid of tension. Embrace it.
  • Become comfortable with tension. Make it your best friend.

Last week, I took a vacation to spend time with my amazing husband and two boys. On this vacation, we went to New Mexico to attend my 19-year high school reunion. During my vacation, I have come to learn many valuable lessons about myself – one of which was how much insecurity has impacted my life all through school as well as my early adult life.

Ladies, insecurity is a very, very common thing to experience. However, it also carries a huge price tag. Today, I want to get a little personal with you and share how my high school reunion has opened my eyes to “a whole new world,” how I plan to stop doubting myself and being insecure, and how you can go with me along this journey to becoming a more confident you!

We can’t change society without changing ourselves. – Eleanor Beaton

Here’s a Breakdown of Today’s Episode:

  • Research shows that 7 out of every 10 girls believe they are not good enough or don’t measure up in some way.
  • Self-esteem in girls starts to plummet after the age of 10.
  • Insecurity stops you from fully connecting with your experiences and the people around you.
  • Self-doubt is a waste of time, energy, and potential.
  • Be aware of your insecurities, kick them to the curb, and keep on truckin’.

My Challenge to You:

Join me in taking these steps to overcome insecurities, live to your fullest potential, and achieve goals you will be profoundly proud of 20, 30, or 40 years from now:

  • Say “no more” to hiding.
  • Say “no more” to trying to be nice when you really need to express your opinion.
  • Say “no more” to worrying whether or not you look awesome. (Deep down, you know you always look awesome!)
  • Say “no more” to doubting your abilities when you know your abilities are good enough for your purposes, or you have the tools you need to get them where they need to be to execute and fulfil your vision and purpose.
  • Be aware and diligent about when your insecurities rear their ugly head. Call them out, dust them off, lay them on the side of the track and move on.

It’s always a good idea to identify potential problems before starting out on something, but it’s not so great if you let them deter you from following through with your plans. Over the last month I’ve had several questions on this topic, all variations on the theme of “If I take this action, will this bad thing happen?” Often they’re valid concerns – but should they stop you doing something that your intuition tells you is a good idea? I don’t think so, and that’s why I decided to make this podcast.

In today’s episode I want to talk about this trend, why it’s holding us back and how we can rise above it. I’m taking inspiration from the words of Mark Twain - “I've lived through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.”

How hypothetical problems hold us back – and why it matters

  • Your intuition whispers; your fears scream.
  • The voice of your intuition is worth listening to, but it’s quiet. It speaks quietly and softly, and you have to listen carefully for it.
  • Your fears, however, are really good at making themselves heard. Unless you make a conscious effort they can easily bulldoze your intuitive voice.
  • Learn what the fear voice sounds like, so you’ll recognize it when it tries to make you hold back.
  • Deal with problems that actually exist.
  • You need to deal with problems that are affecting you, but why be distracted by ones that might occur?
  • Being prepared is good, but when you start to listen to fears you’re leaning out, not leaning in.
  • Create the problem, then deal with it.
  • Often, problems arise when you take a step forwards. If you avoid the problems you’re also avoiding the opportunity.
  • Create the problem! You can overcome it, and it’s a sign that you’re getting somewhere.
  • I find that the problems people are worried about are actually good ones to have. You’re worried that you’ll end up with more clients than you can handle? Fantastic! Go for it; if
  • Real problems are easier to deal with than theoretical ones.
  • When you’re thinking about a problem you aren’t facing yet, what can you do about it? The only real solution is to avoid taking the steps that might cause it – but what will you be giving up if you do that?
  • Face the challenge.
  • Work your way into having some good problems to deal with. Bring on those extra clients or packed schedule.
  • I’ve never encountered a problem that I couldn’t deal with or find someone to help me with. Notice your fears, but don’t invest in them.
  • …especially fears of your own greatness!

Speaking engagements are a powerful strategy that many women thought leaders use to help build their businesses and position themselves as the ‘go-to’ expert in their fields. Many women thought leaders have the internal compulsion to get up on stage, share their stories, ideas, insights, and message to a larger audience – but are unsure of how to make it happen. They become perfectionists, focusing on perfecting their full-length speeches before they’ve even landed a speaking gig, or they have the desire to speak but aren’t sure about what it takes to step onto that big stage.

In today’s episode, I want to share with you five insider secrets about speaking engagements that you will want to know before stepping foot on the stage floor.

5 Insider Secrets About Speaking Engagements

  • The Business World Craves Women Speakers.
  • Conference organizers are looking for women speakers.
  • If you dream of speaking, make the internal commitment and just do it!
  • Don’t Expect to Be A Highly Paid Speaker… At First.
  • At first, you may need to accept free speaking gigs. Although you’re not getting paid to talk, you are getting something even more valuable: experience, reputation growth, and – potentially – new clients.
  • Solve A Problem For Your Audience.
  • Topics are boring. Solve a big problem for your audience.
  • Find a unique angle. Tell some stories. Make sure your speech addresses a big problem that your audience is struggling with.
  • Get Booked First.
  • Land a speaking gig before creating your full-length speech. Work smarter, not harder.
  • Create an overview, laden with benefits, then approach organizers about speaking at their event.
  • Two great resources for finding speaking engagements:
  • Meetup.com & Professional Associations.
  • It’s All In The Title, Baby!
  • Create a bold headline that focuses on the problem.
  • Compelling headlines work every time.

If you want to learn more about how you can start using speaking engagements to grow your business, your reputation, your track record, and use it as a client attracting machine, send me an email at info@eleanorbeaton.com. Watching a woman transform and take control of her role as a female leader within her organization and step into her power is an incredible thing to witness. It’s like watching a flower bloom – she changes from a delicate, yet instrumental part of an organization’s nature to an impactful, beautiful blooming flower, ready to excite and impress the world around her.

As with the blooming flower, as she gains confidence and will often look different, sound different, and as her impact begins to increase, her income also generally follows suit.

Today, I want to share with you the seven critical strategies that high-achieving women need to develop to create unstoppable confidence, improve their impact within their organization or business, and increase their income.

Top 7 Strategies for Unstoppable Confidence

  1. Ask for forgiveness, not permission.
  • Success favors boldness
  1. Focus on iterations.
  • It’s not about perfection. It’s about iterations.
  • The more we put new work out into the world, the more we hone our confidence, get feedback in real time from real people, and ultimately, the better our products and services will be.
  1. Pick a horse and ride it.
  • You will find success when you choose a course of action, you commit to it, and you go for it.
  • The clarity you are seeking will come through the actions you take.
  1. Stay in action.
  • Take consistent daily actions toward your goals. Course correct as you go.
  1. Find new friends.
  • Your income and your experience will be a direct result of the five people you spend the most time with and are most influenced by.
  1. Conversations create.
  • Network
  • Ask yourself: How many conversations are you having on a daily, or weekly, basis? What are you talking about?
  1. Have a bias to boldness.
  • It is critical for you to stand out from your competitors. Be creative, have an opinion, and speak your opinion to stand out.

Hey there, my fierce ones! Today, I want to talk to you about a conversation that came up at a meeting I attended earlier this week with the CEO, partner, and the senior members of a large professional services firm. During this discussion, an interesting topic came up about how women sometimes need to bend – or break – some “corporate” rules, or ideas we perceive as rules, to step into our power and become the successful leaders we know we can be.

I was so inspired by this conversation and realized that many of the women that I work with every day are often feeling governed by a set of rules that may or may not exist in their organization. So I want to discuss briefly with you why it is so important for you to break a rule every now and then so that you can truly step into your incredible potential and lead your team on your terms, without sacrificing what matters most to you.

Here's a Breakdown of Today’s Episode:

  • The key to rising through the ranks in your organization is always to have a voice.
  • Step into your power. Take control of your schedule. Don’t be afraid to “break a rule” from time to time to lead your team effectively, but without sacrificing your freedom or what’s important to you.
  • Don’ limit yourself – your power – based on a set of rules you created for yourself.

“Sometimes, smart, ambitious women need to break some rules to create the freedom, the impact, and to have the rewards they deserve.” – Eleanor Beaton

My Challenge to You:

Stop worrying about whether you will get into trouble if you step into your power and use your voice. Don’t worry about getting into trouble for setting your own schedule around important things in your life.

Get out there, step into your power, use your voice, and be the ambitious women leader we all know you can be!

Jul 1, 2016

Hey, my fierce leaders! Welcome back to the Fierce Feminine Leadership podcast – the success podcast for ambitious women in business. In today’s episode, I talk a little about the power seat. When you walk into a boardroom, what seat do you usually take at the table? Do you sit at the head of the table? In the corner? Perhaps somewhere in the middle?

In the communications industry, your body language is as important as the things you say and the way you say them.

Think about it. When you enter a boardroom meeting, who is it at that table that commands to have their voice heard, their suggestions and ideas considered? Often, it is the one sitting in the power seat.

So, today, I want to share with you where the power seat is, and why you need to step into your power and take that seat at the big table.

Where Is the Power Seat in a Board Room and Why You Should Occupy It?

  • The power seat is the seat in the middle of the table.
  • Sitting in the middle of the table, with all of your peers surrounding you, puts you in a position of power. It silently signals to your executive peers that your voice and ideas are important and deserve to be considered.

My Challenge to You:

At your next boardroom meeting – and each and every following meeting – find a way to occupy the power seat at the table.

Hello, fierce ones! In today’s episode, I want to share with you a trend that I have noticed over the years while working with women entrepreneurs and female leaders. A trend that – honestly – we need to stop doing, or at least slow down on doing it.

Curating other people’s stories and messages in our businesses.

Ladies, it is time to step into your power, take control of your voice, and use your voice to curate and share you own stories and messages! Your audience wants to hear from you. They want to know your story. Your messages. Your ideas and passions.

Ladies, it’s time to take back the mic and use your voice, your stories, your messages, to empower others, establish a connection with your audience, and step into your power.

My Challenge to You:

If you are ready to play a bigger game in your industry, your business, or your non-profit – you need to start using your voice.

  • Quit paving the way for other people to tell their stories all the time. Start telling your own
  • Figure out a way to get your voice “on air” – either figuratively or literally.
  • Be conscious of all the times in your business and life that you have allowed other people to speak up for you or you “handed over the mic.”

We’ve talked about using your voice on the show before. It’s time now – my wonderfully fierce leaders – for you to use your voice and share your story and message with the world.

“Stop taking the back seat. Stop curating other people’s stories and messages. It’s time for you to speak up. Use your voice to tell your own story and share your own messages with the world. We want to hear from you.” – Eleanor Beaton

“Being an entrepreneur is kind of like being a superhero. Living in that gap and pushing through that wall is what defines us. It’s what characterizes who we are as leaders and as women. We can’t judge ourselves off of someone else’s ending chapter. Give yourself lots of grace. Judge yourself off your own best hard work.” – Robyn Johnson

Processes – or more specifically, creating processes. If you are anything like me, you have a love: hate relationship with creating systems and processes within your business or organization. What are systems and processes? If you are an entrepreneur or a female leader in your organization, they help to empower your team by setting clear expectations and are a critical aspect of building a successful business.

Most female entrepreneurs and women thought-leaders go into business desiring more freedom. However, if your organization is lacking systems and processes that make it easy for your team to follow, can you really consider yourself ‘free’?

“If you really want to be free, the number one thing leaders and entrepreneurs need to do is set up systems and processes for everything in their business or organization.” – Eleanor Beaton

In today’s episode, I am going to share with you some practical ways that you can begin setting up systems and processes within your organization.

3 Practical Ways to Set Up Processes in Your Business or Organization:

  1. Pay attention to each and every instance that you notice yourself doing something more than once.
  2. Ask yourself (or your team): How can I improve my company? If you work with a small team – or even within a larger department – invite your team to participate in workshop-style meetings to brainstorm areas that can be improved. The second session can help you dwindle down their list of ideas into a “top 3” list of priorities as well as develop an action plan to implement a process to improve this area of the business.
  3. Devote at least one hour each week to improving specific aspects of your business, based on the initial feedback from your team – or for entrepreneurs – from the list that you created noting positive improvement areas.

“One of the things that you do as a female entrepreneur or leader is empower others. Setting up systems and processes in your business or organization promotes empowerment within your team or department and creates the foundation of success for your business.” – Eleanor Beaton

Like many of you, I am still learning how to love creating systems and processes in my organization, but we don’t have to do this alone. Take the journey with me and let’s build our successful businesses together.

Today, women are starting businesses faster than ever before! For instance, in the United States, women are starting businesses at a rate five times higher than the national average. In Canada, we are starting new businesses at twice the national average. At these rates, it is undeniable that women-lead businesses are taking industries by storm, but many women are failing to see (or utilize) the benefits of developing recurring revenue streams.

Today, I am going to explain to you what recurring revenue is, why millions of business owners consider it the “Holy Grail of Business,” and why it is crucial for you to begin developing a way to generate recurring revenue in your business.

“If you want to create a business that allows you to be truly free, you’ve gotta find a way to add recurring revenue into your business model.” – Eleanor Beaton

What is ‘Recurring Revenue,’ Anyway?

Recurring revenue is a way for your business to make one sale, and generate a steady income flow month after month on that initial sale. Recurring income is a lot like your phone bill – your telephone provider does not have to keep throwing sales pitches your way for you to continue giving them your business. Instead, the sold you on their telephone service once, and you continue to pay your phone bill month after month, year after year.

Two Great Examples of Businesses with Recurring Revenue:

2 Important Things to Consider To Build a Sustainable Business

  1. How much does it cost you to acquire a new customer?
  2. What is the lifetime value of that customer you have acquired?

How to Determine Your Customer Acquisition Costs:

  • The number of customers you currently have divided by the total sum of your marketing investments equals your customer acquisition cost.

“Recurring revenue decreases your customer acquisition costs and increases the value of that customer.”

My Challenge to You:

Identify a way to create recurring revenue in your business. It will this help you work smarter and increase your company’s worth as much as 2 1/2 to 3 times compared to other companies in your industry without recurring revenue streams.

Ladies, if you’re going to be working hard, I want to make sure you are also working smart. Developing recurring revenue in your business is a critical aspect of building a sustainable business that will allow you the freedom you want with the income you deserve.

Entrepreneurs – and aspiring entrepreneurs – frequently, and quickly, come to the realization as their businesses begin to grow that balancing their work life and personal life is a difficult challenge. I can relate – I have two boys, I travel every month, I run my own business, plus my husband is an entrepreneur.

Life can be pretty chaotic at times, and it can sometimes feel out of balance.

Today, I want to share with you my secret – my rule of thumb – on building my successful business while juggling travel, marriage, and raising my kids.

“Success in business is not about reinventing the wheel. It’s about doing a few core things and doing them very well, over and over.” – Eleanor Beaton

My Rule of Thumb for Keeping Life & Business ‘in Check’:

  • I remind myself: “I can handle the chaos and lack of balance as long as my family life is working well and my health is in good working order.”
  • Make sure that the effort you put into your business or career is worth it and makes sense

“Don’t change the act, change the audience.” – Lisa Sasevich

If you are looking to build a powerful career or business, you need to:

  • Get very clear on your message.
  • Get very clear on what the core things are that you need to focus on in your business.
  • And ask yourself: “Do I have the discipline and determination to continue focusing and perfecting those specific things – or am I going to catch the “bright, shiny penny” syndrome?

Remember, ladies, when you are pursuing something with dogged determination, the natural by-product of that persistence is that other aspects of your life are going to get out of balance.

Come to terms with this reality, and remind yourself that even when things are out of balance, you can handle the chaos as long as you maintain good health and are spending quality time with your family.

Jun 17, 2016

Welcome back, my fierce feminine leaders! In today’s episode, I am recording from the beautiful, warm, Austin, Texas where I am speaking at the EBW 2020 Abundance Live conference with several fabulous women, many of which are reinventing themselves in their careers.

But, today, I want to talk with you about the common question that many women leaders ask themselves – whether they are stepping into a bigger corporate role within their companies, or reinventing themselves as entrepreneurs.

Have you ever said to yourself: “What gives me the right to…”

  • Wear that dress
  • Apply for that promotion
  • Tell someone (respectfully) to shove it
  • Speak at an event or workshop
  • Write a book
  • Take off work early or take a break from work
  • Spend this much money on myself

Ladies, we all ask ourselves “What gives me the right” – especially when we are in the beginning stages of transforming our lives and careers – of reinventing ourselves.

“You have to come to terms with the idea that the only person that is going to give you the right to step into your power – to lead your way – is you.” – Eleanor Beaton

Do you know what’s the one thing that gives you the right to step into your power; to do the thing you truly want to do? The answer is simple – as simple as one word.

Desire.

Ladies, don’t make this journey harder than it needs to be by asking yourself whether or not you have the right. If you want to do it – if you have the desire to do it – that automatically imbues you with the right to do it.

Listen to me:

You have the right!

Changing careers and reinventing yourself is a difficult challenge. In my experience, many women who are trying to reinvent themselves and their careers often try to leave their past careers, experiences, and skills behind them. However, if you are trying to recreate yourself, your career, and your business, leaving your past behind you along with all of the experiences, skills, and insight that you have developed throughout your previous business is a huge mistake!

“Leaving your past behind you – especially when you are reinventing yourself – creates incongruence and in-continuity in your new career path.” – Eleanor Beaton

Ladies, if we want our new clients and customers to trust us, and to believe that we are a thought-leader in our industry, we must tell our stories!

Here’s a Breakdown of Today’s Show:

  • Telling a cohesive, congruent story is critical for building brand equity, culture, and credibility for your business
  • Sonia Samen from Ebby Rane reinvented herself from a corporate attorney to a high-end fashion luggage entrepreneur.
  • Legendary CEO, Christine McGee, CEO and Founder of Sleep Country – the country’s biggest mattress retailer, started her career as a banker

6 Reasons to Tell a Cohesive, Congruent Story about You and Your Business:

  1. It is a key part of your brand equity
  2. It acts as a major differentiator
  3. It makes you more memorable
  4. It creates a sense of who you are
  5. It helps you build a culture for your business
  6. It is critical for building credibility

“Explaining your previous experience & how it helps you serve your current clients builds trust, positions you as an expert, and helps you attract your ideal clients” – Eleanor Beaton

Ask Yourself:

  • What are the threads that connect career #1 to career #2?
  • Think about the skill sets you used.
  • Think about the experiences you had.
  • Think about the insights they gave you and how they helped you be even better in your business and help you serve your clients or customers even better.

“When you are reinventing yourself – there is no such thing as a clean slate.” – Eleanor Beaton

In line with the “Women and Risks” theme from last week’s episodes, today I am joined by the wonderful business and career coach, Sarah Vermunt. Sarah’s journey started while working toward obtaining her Ph.D. in human resources management and organizational behavior. After devoting four years of her life, and investing a lot of money into developing her career, Sarah began to realize that this career choice was not what she dreamed about after all. After spending two years dedicating her time to her previous career dreams, she went on a mission to find the work she loves – being a coach and teacher for entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, and new graduates.

Sarah is the founder of CareerGasm and works primarily with aspiring entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, and college graduates to help them figure out what they want from their careers and businesses. She is the author of an up-and-coming book and has written several articles for leading business publications such as Forbes, Entrepreneur, Inc., the Huffington Post, and U.S. News & World Report. Today, Sarah shares her insights and tips for our wonderful listeners to help them gain some clarity into what they really want from their careers or businesses, and what they need to do to achieve that dream.

Here’s a Breakdown of Today’s Show:

  • Sarah explains how she came up with the unique name for her business: CareerGasm.
  • We talk about the turning point in her career that caused her to change career paths and begin building her thriving coaching business.
  • Sarah explains why she “stuck it out” for two years in a field she hated – instead of shifting gears and starting her coaching business sooner.
  • She shares some of the most common fears and apprehension that many of her clients often experience when they are considering a career change.
  • She explains some of her key developments as an entrepreneur – both past and current achievements and developments.
  • We talk about her new book: CareerGasm: Find Your Way to Feel Good Work, which is due to hit the bookstores in March 2017.
  • How Sarah arrived at the point of clarity; knowing who she wanted to serve, the problem she wanted to solve, and how she wanted to help her clients achieve their dreams.
  • Sarah shares her thoughts on branding as a differentiator and how she markets her business.

“People don’t quit their jobs on a whim. They quit when they just ‘effing can’t do it anymore.” – Sarah Vermunt

5 Common Fears That Keep People From Leaving a Job They Hate to Follow Their Dream Careers:

  1. Afraid that their skills are not transferable or applicable in other career
  2. Afraid that they will not be valued.
  3. Afraid of being rejected.
  4. Afraid of what other people will think
  5. Afraid that they will not make enough money – maybe lose their house, their car, etc.

“Ask yourself: Is this fear really true? Look at your fears alongside some facts when deciding to make a career change.” – Sarah Vermunt

Sarah’s Advice for Professionals That Want To Start Their Own Business:

Build your business slowly, while you are still working at your full-time job. Use this time as your “trial and error” period while also creating a financial safety net. Hash out your business ideas to learn what will work and what won’t work for you, your clients, and your business.

“Whether it comes to career or business, it’s not just about logic. Intuition plays a large part in career and business planning. Very often, we use logic to discredit the things we know intuitively. Lean into your intuition – it can help you make some really good decisions.” – Sarah Vermunt

Competition in the workforce over the years has become a “taboo topic.” Many women do not want to talk about having a competitive edge in their field. We keep saying “It’s not about competition, it’s about collaboration.” Ladies, competition is a healthy aspect of building your career and business. It allows us to push ourselves past our comfort zones, and while being open to collaboration is important, having a strong competitive edge is also essential.

In our last episode, I spoke with internationally best-selling author, Linda Davies. Some interesting points came up in that episode regarding women taking risks and why it’s necessary for career growth and development. In today’s episode, I talk with you about taking risks, and how taking risks can help you “out hustle” your competition. Taking risks is critical to personal, business, and career growth. Without risks, our businesses cannot flourish. So, what are some ways that you can take a risk to continue developing your business or career?

9 Practical Ways to Take Risks in your Life, Business, and Career:

  1. Make a career or business shift. Interview people who have your dream job, dream business, or work at your dream organization.
  2. Making the commitment to quit your job on a specific date to start a new business.
  3. Launching a new product or service
  4. Taking time away from your business – perhaps for a vacation, holiday, or personal time.
  5. Working with a new mentor.
  6. Investing in learning a new skill, or honing a skill that you already have.
  7. Applying to be a speaker at an upcoming conference.
  8. Raising your hand for a stretch assignment.
  9. Introducing yourself to a “key player” at a networking event.

Your ability to mitigate risk is directly linked to your willingness to hustle.” – Eleanor Beaton

My Challenge to You:

  • Ask yourself: Is there an opportunity for you to take more risks?
  • Ask yourself: What would it mean to you to take a risk that can open the door to more rewards in your life, your business, or your career?
  • Take a risk, and lean into the work to out-hustle your competition.

Welcome back, my Fierce Feminine Leaders! I am incredibly excited about today’s episode and our guest on the show today.

Today we talk about women and risks. Many successful women are afraid to take risks in their business or career, but do not realize that taking risks – stepping out of their comfort zone – often leads to personal and professional growth.

Our lovely guest today, Linda Davies, knows all-too-well the advantages and feelings associated with risk. Linda is a former investment banker who left the corporate world to follow her dream – to take the risk – of making it as a successful writer. She is an Oxford University graduate with a degree in politics, philosophy, and economics and has worked for one of the largest U.S. investment banks in the country. She was the first woman to work in their European Corporate Finance Division. After seven years, she “escaped” the investment banking world to write fiction novels, having published several books, of which, her first was published in over 30 countries and sold over 2-million copies.

Linda has lived in Peru for three years, as well as eight years in the Middle East, where she was kidnapped and held hostage by Iranian government forces for two weeks. Following her rescue, she wrote her memoir – “Hostage: Kidnapped on the High Seas.”

Linda shares her incredible story of how she became a successful author, what happened during her kidnapping and detention in the Middle East, and how this experience has changed her views of the world and the things she considers most important in her life. Her story and the experiences and tips that she shares with us in this episode are nothing short of inspirational.

Thank you, Linda, for sharing your experience with us today.

Here’s a Breakdown of the Topics We Covered:

  • Linda’s story – how she went from being an investment banker to a best-selling author.
  • How Linda balances writing and family life.
  • Why Linda feels that taking risks is important to growth and development – both personally and professionally.
  • What happened to Linda while living in the Middle East – and how it changed her perspective on life and values.
  • Why Linda believes that writing your story – your speech – helps capture what your story

“If you don’t have the confidence to take risks, you won’t grow.” – Linda Davies

Linda’s Suggestion to Professional Women & Women in Business

  • Go for what you want.
  • “Self-belief and the idea that you can change the odds in your favor is key. Plan, plot your dream. Take that risk.”

Welcome back, my Fierce Feminine Leaders! If part of your business consists of public speaking or giving public presentations, then this Is an episode you do not want to miss! Today is all about public speaking. Are you making the most of it? Are you ensuring that your message is delivered the way you intend it – strong, powerful, and making a positive impact on your listeners?

Many women put a strong focus on their visual appearances when they are about to give a speech or present for a room full of engaged professionals, but we often fall short in one critical area. An area that can have just as much of an impact on our message and the way our listeners perceive us. Our voice. Your voice is a crucial element in delivering a powerful speech that resonates with your audiences. It ensures that the message you want to convey gets through to your audience, making them want to seek you out for your expert opinion or buy your product or service. In today’s episode, I will share with you five tips to improve your voice before you get on stage at your next presentation.

5 Tips to Help You Embrace Your Voice:

  1. Stand Up Straight.
  • Stand up straight with your shoulders back. Stand proud. A great voice originates from deep within your core.
  1. Slow Down.
  • Speak slowly and with purpose. Let people absorb your words, your message – don’t try to rush through your speech.
  1. Allow Yourself to be Seen.
  • Don’t be a ‘wallflower’. Embrace your moment in the spotlight – your ’15 minutes of fame’. Enjoy it. You earned it!
  • If you choose to speak and be seen, be 100% committed to it. Let your audience adore you!
  1. Speak from your Stomach.
  • Speak with authority and end on a down note. It punctuates your sentences and allows you to deliver them with more authority.
  1. Lose the Modifiers.
  • Eliminate these words from your vocabulary: “I think,” “kind of,” “maybe,” etc. They are all weak words that detract from the point you are trying to make and make you seem uncertain.

“People have a natural respect for a good, strong voice.” – Eleanor Beaton

Have you ever felt conflicted in your success? Felt confused, uncertain, or even felt like an imposter? Have you recently made a monumental change only to hear a negative voice in your head saying, “Who do you think you are to do something like this?” Thousands of highly successful women go through these feelings each and every day. They feel like they’re crazy. They feel like a “hot mess.”

Rest assured, my Fierce Feminine Leader – you are not crazy. You are upleveling.

In today’s episode, I explain to you what it means to uplevel as well as many familiar feelings – or “symptoms” – that women feel during this great transition.

Here’s a Breakdown of Today’s Show:

  • What is “upleveling,” anyway?
  • You’re not crazy. You’re not an imposter. There are millions of professionals, CEOs feeling the same way you do. It’s called growth – and it hurts.
  • Feeling this way is normal.

“The bigger the uplevel – the hotter the mess.”

When you uplevel, you’re thrown into what’s called “Liminal Space.” You’re not the ‘same ol’ you,’ but you’re not quite settled into the ‘new you.’ You’re somewhere in the middle, and learning to step into the new you.

“Darkness, confusion, and uncertainty is the starting point for major growth and transformation. It’s the necessary ingredient for change.”

My Challenge to You:

Stop thinking you’re crazy. Buckle up and enjoy the ride. Step into your brilliance, your power, and enjoy your success.

Ambitious women in business, especially those in high-energy careers, often struggle through many obstacles and dilemmas. Probably one of the most common dilemma that high-achieving women face are those that are internalized – feeling as though you are “not up to snuff” in your career, despite having a glowing resume, awards, or fantastic recommendations. This dilemma is what I call “Ambitious Woman’s Dilemma, and it is the most common condition affecting ambitious, high-achieving women in business.

In today’s episode, I share with you 6 of the most common symptoms of Ambitious Woman’s Dilemma (AWD), and what you need to do to overcome this condition.

Here’s a Breakdown of Today’s Show:

  • What is Ambitious Woman’s Dilemma?
  • How common is AWD?
  • Is there a way to “cure” the AWD condition – and if so, how?
  • Why highly ambitious women begin feeling the effects of AWD?

What Is Ambitious Woman’s Dilemma?

AWD is a common condition among smart, ambitious women who want to make a difference in the world while genuinely being present for their families and being financially secure but tend to feel like their “not up to snuff” or should be further ahead in their career or personal life than they are currently.

“You know you have Ambitious Woman’s Dilemma if you feel like the rope in a real-life tug-o-war game.” – Eleanor Beaton

6 Common Symptoms of Ambitious Woman’s Dilemma

  1. You feel you are only as good as your last deal, sale, or project.
  • You feel like you have to do things to be awesome and feel safe in the world.
  1. Your ratio of thinking about exercise and your health versus actually doing it is greater than 7 to 1
  1. You do not have any hobbies
  • AWD sufferers do not have any hobbies because, at the end of the work day, they are too busy sleeping, eating, driving, cleaning, or feeding someone.
  1. You sometimes have the feeling that you have lost the sense of play and wonder, that the creative part of you is somehow “dying.”
  1. You can’t slow down.
  • AWD sufferers often think, “Slow down? That’s what losers do!”
  1. You know you’re a confident person, but you don’t understand why you feel insecure at times.
  • Understand the difference between confidence and worthiness.

“When you truly embrace your sense of inner worthiness, you begin to approach your work & your life with a rested edge.” – Eleanor Beaton

In our last episode, I spoke with Joan Michelson of Green Connections Radio. She brought up a fascinating topic about the differences between how women support other women in business compared to the ways men support other people in business. This discussion led me to evaluate how the women within my own network have supported me through various business ventures, as well as how the men in my network have shown their support. One thing that I have found interesting during this evaluation was that women typically demonstrate their support through emotional support while men will often support you through practical support.

In this episode, I share with you the reasons why many women in business often tend to stick with emotional support, and why they need to step out of their comfort zone, step into their power, and help other women in business through practical support strategies.

Here’s a Breakdown of Today’s Show:

  • Women are more likely to offer emotional support to other women in business while men often offer practical support.
  • Women need more than just emotional support to help us step into our economic power. We need practical support and access to professional networks.
  • One of the main reasons women do not offer practical support to other women is often because they do not realize their power. The first step to stepping into your power is to understand that you have it and realize that your biggest source of power is the relationships you have built.

“Business & success are like a river – they’ve gotta flow. If you treat your success like a pond, it will just get stuck.” – Eleanor Beaton

My Challenge to You:

It’s time to start “walking the talk,” ladies. Continue to offer emotional support to the women in business, but step it up a notch and also offer practical support! Here are two tips that you can use to offer practical support to other women in business:

  1. Find ways to make powerful introductions to key business partners, clients, and customers.
  2. Identify people in your network that would be a good supplier to someone else, then introduce them.

Today, I am joined by a fabulously fierce feminine leader, advocate for female leaders throughout the corporate and entrepreneurial world, and owner of Green Connections Radio, Joan Michelson. Joan has made a huge impact in the corporate world and helping women “claim their power” in their industries. Her very specific, unique niche in the business community is in the Clean Tech area, also known as the “green space.” She joins us today to share her story about how the “green space” niche fell in her lap and provide some insight and tips to other women in leadership roles on ways they can find their voice within their organization.

Here’s a Breakdown of the Topics We Covered:

  • Joan’s story – how she dived into the Clean Tech space, the struggles she has endured, and how she overcame those struggles and how she empowers other women to do the same.
  • Statistics show that women tend to get promoted on performance while men get promoted on potential.
  • Women walk into a discussion or decision with a laundry list of assumptions.
  • How Joan felt “held back” in her previous career goals, and what she did to overcome this common obstacle.
  • Women have permission to change the rules in the corporate world, even though many feel as though they don’t.
  • Using relationship building skills and deal closing skills at the same time produces results. Everyone in business – entrepreneurial or corporate – needs to do both.
  • What is Joan’s business model?

“Women tend to limit their choices by – unknowingly or unintentionally – setting boundaries.”

Joan’s Advice for Women Who Are Looking to Build their Voice:

  • Confidence
  • Self-talk – listen to yourself, how you talk to others and yourself, to learn a lot about what your voice is and how you are, in your own way, making assumptions that may or may not be true.
  • Network
  • Be visible
  • Ask for what you want
  • Be willing to hear voices that are different from yours so you can stretch your knowledge. Be willing to learn new things and ask for help.

Joan’s Advice for People Working Within a Corporate Entity and Want to Elevate Their Personal Brand:

  • Go to your company’s communications team and ask to cover the public speaking engagements that the CEO cannot attend. Approach them with specific opportunities that will also benefit the company.

An interesting point was mentioned during my last episode while interviewing Vicki Saunders, the founder of SheEO. She said that women are not asking for help in their businesses – that many women feel they need to do everything on their own in order to be, or feel, successful and accomplished. In reality, though, it is incredibly hard to do everything on your own without asking for help and developing a team.

In this episode, I want to share some tips with you on five ways you can ask for help, and three ways you can ask in the right way.

5 Ways You Can Ask for Help:

  1. Ask for Introductions
  • An introduction is a powerful pre-framing technique in terms of positioning and allowing you to gain access to that person’s network.
  1. Ask People to Spread the Word Through Their Social Media Networks
  • Ninja Move Tip: When asking people to spread the word through their social media platforms, give them an image and some text they can use to promote.
  1. Ask for Advice
  • A wise woman once said, “When you ask for money, you get advice. When you ask for advice, you get money.”
  1. Have a Focus Group or Advisory Board
  2. Interview People

3 Tips on How To Ask for Help In the Right Way

  1. Be Mindful of a Person’s Time
  • Follow the 10-minute rule: “Hey, can we chat for about 10 minutes on the phone? I really need some advice.”
  1. Know What You Want
  • Having a clear picture of what you want and how it fits into your business’ “bigger picture” will help others help and collaborate with you easier and more efficiently.
  1. Have a Beginner’s Mindset
  • Maintain a balance between being open to information and closing down the information so you can implement.

“The most dangerous thing that can happen to a leader is that she begins to cut herself off from information” – Eleanor Beaton

In today’s episode, she shares some of her insight on leadership and entrepreneurship as well as the “art of disruption.”

Vicki routinely speaks at conferences and events around the world, including the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Women of Influence Series in Canada, and the TedX Conference among several others. She was selected as a “Global Leader of Tomorrow” by the World Economic Forum and has co-founded and run several ventures throughout Toronto, Silicon Valley, and Europe.

Vicki, thank you for joining me on the show today and sharing your valuable tips, suggestions, and insight.

Here’s a Breakdown of the Topics We Covered:

  • Vicki’s tips on how women should deal with the world finally catching up to their innovative ideas.
  • SheEo – what is SheEO and what is their mission?

  • Vicki shares the one important leadership lesson she has learned from her 20+ years with building and growing businesses.
  • How and when Vicki stepped into her power.
  • What’s up next for Vicki

“Women are an economic powerhouse that haven’t been tapped into before.” – Vicki Saunders

Interesting Statistics Shared:

  • 4$ of venture capital goes to women-owned businesses, and this figure has remained unchanged for decades.
  • If women were financed at the same degree as men, we would create 6-Million jobs in the next five
  • Women are set to inherit 75% of the world’s inherited wealth.
  • Women are starting businesses at almost twice the rate as men.
  • Women have a buying power of 80-85%

3 Steps Women Can Take to Sharpen Their Entrepreneurial & Intrapreneurial Skills:

  1. Be clear about the problem you are trying to solve.
  2. Broaden your circles of inspiration.
  3. Use that insight to create a model you can use to push you.
