What makes you fascinating and intriguing to your clients, your customers, your business partners, and the people around you? Some of you may already be able to answer this question – and that is great! However, some of you may not realize the fascinating elements of yourself that make you intriguing to others. In fact, you may even believe there is nothing really fascinating about you at all.

My guest today, Sally Hogshead, is passionate about helping brands discover – or rediscover – what makes them fascinating to the people around them. Sally started her career in the advertising industry. In her early 20s, she skyrocketed to the top of the advertising profession and by the age of 24, she became the most award-winning advertising copywriter in the United States. She has worked on numerous advertising campaigns including Mini Cooper, Nike, Godiva Chocolate, and Coca Cola and her work has been displayed in the Smithsonian of American History.

By the age of 27, Sally opened her first advertising agency. Drawing on her remarkable branding legacy, she created The Fascination Advantage Assessment and wrote the book Fascinate: How to Make Your Brand Impossible to Resist. The Fascination Advantage Assessment is the first algorithm to measure how the world views personal brands.

Sally has appeared frequently on national news media – including NBC’s Today show and The New York Times. She joins me today to share why she created The Fascination Advantage Assessment, how it can help you identify what makes you and your brand fascinating, and how identifying what makes you fascinating can help you market your business with more authority.

“You are fascinating. You don’t have to change. Just find those qualities and do more of it.” – Sally Hogshead

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • We have all killed off parts of our authentic selves in favor of playing it safe
  • When you shut your authentic-self down – you are denying the world that “spark”
  • How The Fascination Advantage Assessment can help you rediscover your “spark”
  • How identifying how you are different and what you do best can help you develop and improve how you market your brand

Sally’s Advice to Fierce Feminine Leaders:

The world is not changed by people who sort of care. The world is changed by people who passionately, irrationally, excitedly care. It is changed by you. In order to do that, you have to know how the world sees you. Once you know how the world sees you – it’s game on!

Mansplainers. Ladies, you know what they are – even if you’ve never heard the term. Mansplaining is a blend of the words “man” and “explaining.” Its when you are explaining something to someone – most often a man to a woman – in such a way that is condescending or patronizing.

Today’s episode is all about the mansplainer. As you listen to today’s show, I want you to ask yourself: “Am I a mansplainer?”

Mansplaining has become a commonality throughout our lives and cultures. In fact, research has shown that female doctors are twice as likely to be interrupted by their patients as male doctors. Until recently, mansplaining has affected primarily women, but today, the tables are beginning to shift as more and more women begin to assert themselves professionally.

So, how do you know if you are a mansplainer?

5 Signs You Are A Mansplainer

  1. You lack the self-awareness to recognize – even after you’ve learned the description – whether or not you are a manslplainer. (For example: you’ve heard my description of a mansplainer, and still haven’t asked yourself if you fall into this description.)
  2. You automatically think you know more than women and it is your place to mentor, guide, and advise them? #HeresYourSign
  3. You frequently interrupt women on a regular basis.
  4. Women around you are not coming to you with their thoughts and ideas.
  5. You don’t ask many – if any – open-ended questions.

When you look at how you structure your days, are you setting yourself up for balance and rejuvenation from the moment you wake up until the time you go to bed? Are you really creating a system or schedule that allows you to achieve a peaceful, tranquil, beautiful life – or are you structuring your day for chaos, stress, anxiety – or worse – burnout?

My guest today is Tara Marino. Tara is the creator of the Femme Types, an internal technology helping women realize their full potential while receiving their beautiful life. She is the owner of Elegant Femme, a company dedicated to helping women around the world live a life of beauty, travel, and soul. She joins me today to share why she believes it’s so important for women to structure their day around the three core traits that ever woman possesses. She explains what those traits are – which she calls the Femme Types – and how identifying and honoring each of them every day have helped her move out of depression and into a beautiful life she enjoys living.

"If we are not honoring who we really are, that affects us.” – Tara Marino

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • Staying disciplined and structuring your day around your Femme Flow
  • Why Tara decided to move to Paris – and how she made her dream a reality
  • The power of saying “little yeses” in the direction of your desires

Tara’s Words of Wisdom:

  1. Slow down and think about the circumstances in your life and how it might assist you in recognizing who you really are. Ask yourself: What if this was to serve me in some way? How would I choose to have it serve me? Really go into that space inside and feel the possibility of expansion.
  2. Ask yourself: What is that dream inside me? You’re here for your unique expression of who you are in the world. Go all the way!
  3. Be truly present and aware of how far you have come. Look around your life and really let it soak in. Celebrate what you have accomplished so far.

The working world has changed drastically over the last 50+ years. In the world that our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents lived and worked, it was common to step out into the work force and maintain the same job and responsibilities until they retired. Today, though, it is much more common for people in the work force to pivot their careers – and even switch the industries in which they work.

My guest today is author, public speaker, and career and business strategist, Jenny Blake. Jenny helps people move past the “burnout” phase and into careers they love. Today, we discuss how to seamlessly and continually double-down on your strengths, interests, and experience to approach career changes from a powerful place. We also discuss how to identify new opportunities that will help you develop new skills and how to run “pilot” experiments to help you figure out what to do next.

“Not all pivots have to be big and dramatic. Sometimes, it’s just about mapping your next move within whatever you’re currently doing.” – Jenny Blake

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • How company pivots have impacted individual and millennial pivots
  • Individual ideas of “what is working” and how it evolved over generations
  • The basis of Jenny’s 4-step framework process
  • Getting traction within your organization for your pilot projects
  • Pilot examples for small business owners and entrepreneurs
  • Dealing with anxiety and a lack of clarity
  • Transitioning from intrapreneur to entrepreneur
  • Recharging habits and routines

Jenny’s 4-Step Pivot Framework:

  1. Step 1 – The Plant Phase – Setting the foundation
  2. Step 2 – Scanning – Looking at what’s out there related to your strengths and one-year vision
  3. Step 3 – Pilot – Small experiments to help you assess the 3 E’s: Enjoyment, Expertise, and Expansion
  4. Step 4 – Launch – The “all-in” moment

Pivoting Questions to Ask Yourself:

  1. What’s already working for me?
  2. What are my strengths?
  3. What are people asking my advice on the most?
  4. What do I enjoy the most?
  5. When do I feel the most “in the zone?”
  6. How am I already earning an income?
  7. Who do I already know?

In episode 151 of the Fierce Feminine Leadership podcast, Amy Jo Kim provided powerful insight from the game design industry on ways you can create innovative ideas and turn them into highly successful products and services. During the conversation, the idea of “killing your darlings” came up numerous times as well as why it’s important to evaluate, assess, and let go of the things that are not working for your project, business, or organization.

Today, I want to discuss what it means to “kill your darlings” and why taking this step is often one of the hardest for many entrepreneurs and female leaders. I also want to share the positive impact that letting go of what’s not working can have on your business or organization once you get past the emotional aspect of “killing your baby” and begin pruning it to perfection as well as share some key questions you should ask to help identify what is working, what’s not working, and what your next steps should be.

When you’re willing to kill off the darlings to preserve the body of strength of your work, you will find that not only do you develop a deeper sense of confidence, but your relationship with your tribe and overall effectiveness is greatly enhanced.

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • The emotional aspect of killing your darlings
  • Why it’s important to prune what’s not working to make room for things that work
  • Utilizing feedback from “fussy” clients and customers

3 “Darling Killing” Questions You Should Be Asking:

  1. What should you keep doing because it’s working?
  2. What should you stop doing because it is not working?
  3. What should you start doing because it would be even more helpful?

Have you ever thought about how your clothes impact your self-esteem and the way you feel? Whether you are stepping out on a stage to give a presentation to a massive audience, dressing for success for a day at the office, or you’re wearing your “comfy clothes” while running the kids to soccer practice, your style and the clothes you wear have an impact on the way you feel about yourself, your success, and how you present yourself to the world.

On today’s episode, my guest is personal stylist Maegan Watson. Maegan is a dear friend and colleague of mine and the founder of Watson Style Group – a group dedicated to creating wardrobes that help people feel the way they want and love the way they look. She has over 10 years of experience helping women transform their wardrobes and put an end to the seemingly unending question: “What should I wear today?” Maegan shares her thoughts on how style is different from fashion and the insights she has learned from conducting hundreds of in-depth conversations and interviews with women about their style and how it affects their overall view of themselves and how they feel.

“When we have a wardrobe or an outfit that reminds us of what we want, they become an anchor.” – Maegan Watson

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • Style is creating the image that is going to make you know yourself on a deeper level.
  • All women want the same things when it comes to style – they all want to be able to reflect something about themselves.
  • Reflecting your personal and professional mission through your style and wardrobe.
  • Addressing the idea that style is frivolous or meaningless and why it’s important.
  • The process Maegan uses to personalize wardrobes for her clients.
  • The dynamic approach her team uses to support her clients wardrobe transformations.

Maegan’s Tips for Enhancing Your Style:

  • Stop focusing on how you look. Focus on how you feel in outfits.

Whether you’ve been in business for several years or are just getting started, scaling your business can be scary and complicated – but also incredibly rewarding. My guest today, Sue Bennett, is the Principle and CEO of Bennett Design Associates, Inc. – a company she founded 20 years ago, and has grown from the ground up. She is also the owner of the Air Force Mavericks All-Star Cheerleading Club, a company she founded from her passion and love for gymnastics and cheer.

Sue’s company, Bennett Design, started with a vision to build a better design firm; one that focused on delivering “detail-driven design.” Today, it is one of the largest interior design firms in Toronto with over 40 people on staff. Her company has developed proprietary software for workplace strategy and project management to provide her clients with the absolute best service available.

On today’s episode, she shares her story of how she got started in business and her journey to success, her secrets of scaling – not one, but two – highly successful businesses, and what she identified as the turning point in her career that helped her on her journey to success.

“Every time you grow, you need to make sure you are considering the people working, what’s working for them, and what’s not.” – Sue Bennett

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • Being curious and how following your curiosity can be a huge success factor for your business.
  • The critical nature of having self-belief an its role in achieving success.
  • Evolving your business to keep pace with the modern workforce.

Right now is an incredibly exciting time for the state of small business. Thousands of people around the world are getting inspired to start a business, work for themselves, and follow their passions. In fact, statistics have shown that over the last 20 years, the growth rate of non-employer businesses in the United States has grown by a whopping 62%! Payroll jobs, however, have only grown by about 12%. More and more people around the world are realizing the shaky ground that is occurring throughout “traditional employment” and deciding to take action and take their fate into their own hands.

On today’s episode of Fierce Feminine Leadership...

It took less than 2 years for CEO and Founder of BikiniLuxe, Candice Galek to  parlay her experience as a swimsuit model into a thriving multimillion dollar online swimwear business. What started as a tiny startup on her living room table in Miami Beach, FL  is now  a global powerhouse business with a team of 40 members worldwide and quarter million social media followers.

From the onset of BikiniLuxe, Candice realized she needed to leverage her wealth of knowledge about the swimsuit industry as well as the connections she had made during her modeling career to get BikiniLuxe off the ground. That coupled with her strong skillset in sales and customer relations laid the foundation for her success.

More about BikiniLuxe

  • They sell over 4000 swimwear products for women and men through the site.
  • Most of the brands represented on the site have demonstrated a corporate social responsibility in which they give back to the community.
  • Entering into their third year they’ll hit $5 million in sales.

Candice’s Advice to Entrepreneurs...

  • Be open to new ideas and push the boundaries
  • Leverage your connections to gain legitimate information and to gain new connections
  • When making connections make the highest connection you can possibly reach.
  • Don’t spend too much time on one thing.- pitch 20 people rather than spending a lot of time on one person
  • Look to large scale businesses to see what they are doing wrong and try and do it better
  • Be persistent
  • “Don’t spend your time or money on being boring.”

Candice on embracing controversy and being galvanizing in expressing your views.

  • Attention spans are short- people are one click away from scrolling by you and your content. Controversy can help keep people focused on you and your message.
  • Controversy can be leveraged into massive social media reach.

Today on Fierce Feminine Leadership…

Today we’re talking to the accomplished copy conversion mentor, speaker and published author, Sarah Grear. Sarah has personally written copy for over 200 businesses from start-ups to 7 figures. She has been featured by Huffington post as one of the top 50 must follow entrepreneurs for 2017.

Her focus is on helping entrepreneurs turn online lookers into online buyers with persuasive writing. Today Sarah will demonstrate to us the wealth of opportunity inherent in the world of online business for women entrepreneurs.

More about Sarah Grear….

  • Sarah has been a speaker at many events, including social media week in Los Angeles
  • Her DIY online writing class has over 1000 students
  • She was previously a travel blogger
  • After doing several online videos, Sarah was offered many speaking opportunities. People saw her confidence and authority shine through the camera and realized her potential.

The online world helps you close the income gap for earning online, and changes the possibilities from what you were told could not be possible to reality. There is no ceiling for how much you can earn within the online world.

According to Sarah, many of her female clients have closed the income gap and been successful in their online businesses by leaning into their strengths. Being clear on what you are good at and building a strong team to fill in the gaps where you have weaknesses is crucial.

3 power moves that Sarah implements to help her be more successful:

  1. Celebration- Sarah celebrates every step of her business. All the little things need to be celebrated. No matter the results you have got out of your launch or event, you should still celebrate.
  2. Learn how to upgrade your thoughts-You need to learn how to look at things in a positive light, and look at them as upgrades.
  3. Learn how to be playful. Learn to be playful, even when there are a lot of moving parts around you. This will allow you to stay grounded and focus on your goals.

Recently I was coaching a very successful, experienced, and established woman in business about speaking and taking the stage more, and she expressed to me that one of her number one concerns around doing that is opening herself up to public criticism.

When you are on a stage and somebody raises their hand to ask a question, there is always the possibility that you may encounter some kickback from an audience member.  Here's what you can do if you find yourself face-to-face with a dreaded heckler:

5 Tips to Handle Hecklers:

  1. Breathe. This is an opportunity for you to step into your leadership and demonstrate your poise. Do that by making sure that your brain is filled with good clean oxygen.
  2. Determine if the person is simply asking a tough question or if it is a personal attack. If it's a tough question, you have several choices:
    1. You made endeavour to answer that question,
    2. You may respond with a question,
    3. You may pivot the question to something you actually want to talk about,
    4. Or you may simply say” let me get back to you on that, I don't have that information right now."
  3. Don’t engage, disengage. Do not respond to them by staring at them directly but by looking around at the audience while you are responding. Do not give a heckler energy and focus because that is what they feed on.
  4. If there is a rant, interrupt the rant. Say “Excuse me sir/ma'am, what is your question?” If they start ranting again you ask them to use the words “My question is” to receive more clarity.
  5. Ask for support. You may ask someone from your team to speak with this person individually or you may choose to involve the audience. You may say respectfully, to the audience, “Should I go on with the rest of my presentation, or do you want to hear more from this person?” At this point you will likely receive support to move on with your presentation.

Positioning is ultimately a skill, that when mastered will become one of the most powerful communication tools you have. This tool can ultimately separate women of pre-eminence from everybody else.

You use positioning anytime you want to influence an outcome:

  • when asking someone for a sale,
  • when engaged in business development,
  • when sitting around the boardroom table,
  • or when asking for a job/raise/promotion.

Why is it that so many of these opportunities break down? It’s a lack of, or improper positioning.

Positioning is the way you frame your ask, argument or offer to make it relevant, compelling and urgent.

If you want to influence an outcome, you must make it relevant, compelling, and urgent to the person who you are addressing. The idea behind this is that people are far too preoccupied and stressed to care about what you have to say. On a day-to-day basis, the average person focuses primarily on their own problems and issues. If you want to really reach a person, you need to give someone a reason to care about what it is you have say.

Most people are tuned into “WIIFM” (What’s In It For Me) radio. Moreover, most people do not like change and will avoid making decisions until they need to. That is why if you are trying to make a change, you MUST make it relevant, compelling and urgent.

On Today's Episode.……

Mechanical engineer, social advocate, and writer Yassmin Abdel-Magied discusses redefining the narrative and views on young Muslim women.   Eleanor and Yassmin discuss how Yassmin has set out to do the things that she wants to do, rather than go along with the expectations deemed by society around her.

As a young Muslim women Yassmin faces unconscious bias and racism in her line of work as a mechanical engineer where she is surrounded primarily by white males. Yassmin is a force to be reckoned with and has proven time after time that it is possible to stand out and be who you want to be as well as do what you want to do in life.

About Yassmin

  • She is mechanical engineer by profession, amatuer boxer, and race car enthusiast
  • 2015 winner of the Queensland Young Australian Of the Year Award
  • Yassmin advocates for the empowerment of youth, women, and those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
  • Yassmin founded the non-profit organization Youth Without Borders at age 16 and today at age 25 she is a passionate advocate for young Muslim women.
  • The Truth About Racism is a documentary that Yassmin filmed last year that covers the neuroscience behind racism and bias.
  • Recently started an organization called MUMTAZA which empowers women of color to reach positions of power and influence

Takeaways

  • Live your own story- choose what you want to do versus following what everybody else is doing
  • Consciously choose to believe your dreams are possible- First you need to consciously make the decision you’re going to do something and then figure out how you’re going to execute.
    • Don’t let doubt negate your ideas or dreams
    • Make your dreams achievable by breaking them down into smaller steps to get there

Within Yassmin’s line of work and organizations she has started, she has encountered criticism. Typically if you are a women, who is young, black, Muslim etc, you will most likely be told you are wrong and that you shouldn’t have the opinions that you have. Yassmin’s goal is to bring light to these racial issues and be an advocate for the empowerment of young diverse women.

On this Episode of Fierce Feminine Leadership...

When it comes to creating the success that you crave, many women let themselves down by not executing on the little things day in and day out that will ultimately make a difference.

  • The little things are what can hold you back from success in your business
  • You wake up every day with choices. Will you say “yes” to an invitation to speak at an event? Will you ask for the sale?
  • Each day you are faced with moments where you can lean in to the challenge, and take a small step.
  • You mustn’t listen to the voice inside you that says it is too hard or too much work. If you do, the big things will not happen for you.

Remember…

If you have big dreams and big goals, you MUST take the small consistent daily risks required to get yourself a seat at the big tables. It’s the emails and calls that you have to execute if you want to achieve your BIG GOALS this year. It is the COURAGE you must have in the moment to keep showing up.

If you show up for the little things, the big things will take care of themselves.

Final thoughts...

If you execute on just a few simple shifts or small changes, you can add thousands of dollars to your revenue. To be successful you must be confident in yourself and be confident in the shifts you are making.

If you want to alter your trajectory for your business an career through major changes, stop worrying so much on the big things and focus instead on the little moments throughout the day that will make a difference.
