We all know that feedback is vitally important to our growth as entrepreneurs. Without feedback, how would we know what areas of our business and the way we lead our teams need to be improved upon? Sometimes, though, feedback can be hard to accept. Sometimes, well-intentioned people in our lives give us feedback that may not be helpful in advancing us toward the next level of success we want to achieve in our lives, businesses, or careers.

On today’s episode, I’m sharing 5 powerful tips on getting the candid feedback you need to advance in your business and career. I’m also sharing a few key strategies that I use to help me decipher whether a piece of feedback that I receive is truly feedback or merely a statement of judgement as well as how I handle the judgmental “haters” that provide unconstructive feedback.

“Attitude, moodiness, and defensiveness are the surest ways to have people stop bringing you feedback and begin writing you off.”

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • The relationship between gender bias and the lack of feedback among female professionals
  • Getting used to receiving and asking for blunt, harsh feedback
  • How to identify and handle unconstructive criticism

3 Ways to Handle Unconstructive Criticism:

  1. Remember Oprah’s phrase: “People will support you until you exceed their expectations of you.”
  2. Allow yourself to get angry. It’s okay to rant and vent a little!
  3. Identify if there is a lesson you can take from the feedback. If so, take the lesson. If not, discard the feedback and move on.

Every day, we hear from women with incredible dreams. Dreams of achieving big things, big goals. Dreams of making an impact and connecting with thousands of people. The dream of doing more and making an impact on the world around you is a huge endeavor!

But what does it really take to achieve these big goals? What does it take to become the CEO of your company or to grow your business and become a speaker? What does it take to become one of the top 4-percent of powerhouse women leaders?

Last week, I was honored to share the stage with several powerhouse speakers, including Hillary Clinton and Rosario Dawson, at the Professional Business Women Association of California’s annual conference to talk about how the top 4-percent of women think. Today, I want to share with you some of the insight I have learned throughout my career of what it really takes to achieve the big goals in your professional career.

“The scope of your goals are in direct proportion to your willingness to do what is required to reach those goals.”

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • The missing piece of the equation preventing you from achieving your big goals and dreams.
  • Determining your willingness to achieve your goals.
  • The qualities that the top 4-percent of women leaders have that allow them to achieve their goals.

4 Qualities of the Top 4% of Women Leaders:

  1. Intentional
  2. Commitment
  3. Willing to do the work
  4. Willing to make sacrifices

My Challenge to You:

  • Think about the goal that you say you want.
  • Ask yourself if you would still want that goal if it took three times as long to achieve it
  • Ask yourself if you would still want it if it took three times the sacrifice to achieve it.

Powerful women leaders understand that the single most important thing they can do to up level their careers, businesses and lives is to focus on getting RESULTS. In this episode, Eleanor Beaton shows you one powerful concept you can use each day to radically improve your RESULTS.

Jun 26, 2017

As 2016 comes to a close, many fierce feminine leaders are starting to envision and plan what they want to accomplish in the upcoming year. Developing a strategy and action plan each year is a critical step to propelling your business forward, maintaining your already achieved momentum, and clearing a path so you can find your seat at the big tables.

Today, I want to share with you the types of people you should avoid in 2017. These are people who will inevitably derail your strategy to success, make you feel undervalued, self-conscious, and inhibit your performance.

For every hour you spend with a crazy-maker, you are going to spend about 5 to 10 hours paying for it.

Here’s a Breakdown of Today’s Show:

  • Women who execute well and get stuff done are more successful because they manage their state of mind well.
  • Your ‘state’ – or state of mind – is how you feel, manage, and react to how you are feeling from one moment to the next.
  • Limiting your exposure to negative people – the crazy-makers – will help improve your ‘state’.

5 Common Crazy-Maker Categories to Edit Out of Your Life in 2017:

  1. The ‘Red Alert’ People – Those people who are always afraid, always see pitfalls, dangers or threats and want you to be afraid, too.
  2. The “Undermining’ People – Those who are jealous or feel threatened by what you are doing. The people who make you feel self-conscious about yourself or your work. These people will curb your creativity, effectiveness, and your ability to get things done.
  3. The “Constructive Feedback” People – People who give you ‘constructive feedback’ when you didn’t ask for it – even when they don’t know what they are talking about or their feedback isn’t helpful.
  4. The “It Should Have Happened Yesterday” People – Those who lack the patience or don’t realize that it takes time to execute things properly.
  5. The “Stuck in a Rut” People – The people who have their own problems, but refuse to do their own work to make a change. Those people who talk about the same issues and problems repeatedly without taking action.

My Challenge To You:

Many women struggle with self-confidence and courage – which often prevents them from achieving their true potential. Surrounding yourself with brave, courageous women is critically important as a fierce feminine leader and entrepreneur. It can help you step into your power and bring the best of who you are – unapologetically.

My guest today is powerhouse entrepreneur, Mandy Rennehan. Mandy is a blue-collar CEO and the founder of the retail construction company, FreshCo. FreshCo is the first and most successful full-service on call retail maintenance and construction company in the United States today. Mandy and her company have worked with countless retail giants including Tiffany & Co, Apple, NIKE, The Gap, Banana Republic, and Home Depot.

Mandy has been named as one of Canada’s top female entrepreneurs. Currently, she is one of the Women’s Executive Network’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women, Profit Magazine’s Top W100, and Atlantic Business Magazine’s Top 50 CEO’s. Additionally, she has been featured in the Globe & Mail, Financial Post, and the Business News Network. Today, she joins me to share how her experience as a talented athlete and 4-H member has helped shape who she is today. She also explains the impact that being herself and staying confident in her abilities has helped improve and grow her business to the highly-successful company that it is today.

“Women just need the permission to hear their voice and go after it.” – Mandy Rennehan

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • How she got started in the construction industry
  • How changing the way she sourced people on her team became one of the biggest turning points in her career
  • How being herself helped her grow her business
  • Hiring team members that align with your personality, ambition, and work ethic
  • Making the shift from “do-er” to CEO
  • How confidence led her to winning her first $3-Million contract
  • Others relate to those who are unafraid

3 Critical Factors of Scaling a Business:

  1. Identify when you are ready to grow
  2. Ask yourself: Are you prepared to put time into other people, technology, and the results of growth
  3. Ask yourself: Are you prepared for what might happen

Courage is the fuel behind the fire of achieving major accomplishments for many fierce entrepreneurs. Whether we realize it or not, gender stereotypes and gender inequality often starts at an early age. In fact, if you have ever walked into a toy store or children’s clothing store, you may have seen this issue creeping up in the toys and clothes available for our young girls. My guest today is Jodi Bondi Norgaard, and she is on a mission to smash the gender stereotype that is currently trending in the toy industry – particularly with dolls.

Jodi is the founder and former owner of the Dream Big toy company – the company responsible for creating the Go! Go! Sports Girl line of dolls, books, and apps that encourage healthy and active play for girls. Today, she focuses her energy on speaking about issues regarding gender stereotypes, gender equality, and girl empowerment. On today’s episode, Jodi shares her experience and passion for educating others on gender stereotypes, her mission to empower young girls today to achieve their dreams beyond fashion, and shares what lead her to create a business around female empowerment.

What makes you fascinating and intriguing to your clients, your customers, your business partners, and the people around you? Some of you may already be able to answer this question – and that is great! However, some of you may not realize the fascinating elements of yourself that make you intriguing to others. In fact, you may even believe there is nothing really fascinating about you at all.

My guest today, Sally Hogshead, is passionate about helping brands discover – or rediscover – what makes them fascinating to the people around them. Sally started her career in the advertising industry. In her early 20s, she skyrocketed to the top of the advertising profession and by the age of 24, she became the most award-winning advertising copywriter in the United States. She has worked on numerous advertising campaigns including Mini Cooper, Nike, Godiva Chocolate, and Coca Cola and her work has been displayed in the Smithsonian of American History.

By the age of 27, Sally opened her first advertising agency. Drawing on her remarkable branding legacy, she created The Fascination Advantage Assessment and wrote the book Fascinate: How to Make Your Brand Impossible to Resist. The Fascination Advantage Assessment is the first algorithm to measure how the world views personal brands.

Sally has appeared frequently on national news media – including NBC’s Today show and The New York Times. She joins me today to share why she created The Fascination Advantage Assessment, how it can help you identify what makes you and your brand fascinating, and how identifying what makes you fascinating can help you market your business with more authority.

“You are fascinating. You don’t have to change. Just find those qualities and do more of it.” – Sally Hogshead

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • We have all killed off parts of our authentic selves in favor of playing it safe
  • When you shut your authentic-self down – you are denying the world that “spark”
  • How The Fascination Advantage Assessment can help you rediscover your “spark”
  • How identifying how you are different and what you do best can help you develop and improve how you market your brand

Sally’s Advice to Fierce Feminine Leaders:

The world is not changed by people who sort of care. The world is changed by people who passionately, irrationally, excitedly care. It is changed by you. In order to do that, you have to know how the world sees you. Once you know how the world sees you – it’s game on!

Mansplainers. Ladies, you know what they are – even if you’ve never heard the term. Mansplaining is a blend of the words “man” and “explaining.” Its when you are explaining something to someone – most often a man to a woman – in such a way that is condescending or patronizing.

Today’s episode is all about the mansplainer. As you listen to today’s show, I want you to ask yourself: “Am I a mansplainer?”

Mansplaining has become a commonality throughout our lives and cultures. In fact, research has shown that female doctors are twice as likely to be interrupted by their patients as male doctors. Until recently, mansplaining has affected primarily women, but today, the tables are beginning to shift as more and more women begin to assert themselves professionally.

So, how do you know if you are a mansplainer?

5 Signs You Are A Mansplainer

  1. You lack the self-awareness to recognize – even after you’ve learned the description – whether or not you are a manslplainer. (For example: you’ve heard my description of a mansplainer, and still haven’t asked yourself if you fall into this description.)
  2. You automatically think you know more than women and it is your place to mentor, guide, and advise them? #HeresYourSign
  3. You frequently interrupt women on a regular basis.
  4. Women around you are not coming to you with their thoughts and ideas.
  5. You don’t ask many – if any – open-ended questions.

Going through a challenging, potentially life-destroying situation is never easy. No know knows this better than my guest, Jas Boothe, founder of the non-profit organization – Final Salute Inc – for homeless female veterans. Jas is an Army Reserves veteran with 17 years of military experience as well as a cancer survivor. She has been recognized by Oprah Winfrey, People Magazine, and CNN for her work within her organization.

Jas joins me on the show today to share her story of overcoming some of the biggest challenges in her life – including being discharged from the military, being diagnosed with an aggressive form of head, neck, and throat cancer, as well as losing her home during Hurricane Katrina. She explains how these experiences motivated her to start her organization and dedicate herself to helping over 2,000 female military veterans each year find safe, suitable housing.

“I realized no one was RSVP-ing to my pity party.” – Jas Boothe

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • Coping with a devastating cancer diagnosis after losing her new home to Hurricane Katrina
  • Finding motivation to change the outcome of her situation – and the situations of others
  • The birth of Final Salute Inc and its mission to serve the women who have served
  • Services and programs available to homeless female veterans and their children

How do you get from where you are in business to where you want to be? What are the keys to leveling up in your business and creating the path that leads to the success you envisioned for yourself, your business, and your career?

Today, I’m talking with Joy Chudacoff. Joy is a highly-acclaimed, sought-after business strategist for female entrepreneurs. When you look at how you structure your days, are you setting yourself up for balance and rejuvenation from the moment you wake up until the time you go to bed? Are you really creating a system or schedule that allows you to achieve a peaceful, tranquil, beautiful life – or are you structuring your day for chaos, stress, anxiety – or worse – burnout?

My guest today is Tara Marino. Tara is the creator of the Femme Types, an internal technology helping women realize their full potential while receiving their beautiful life. She is the owner of Elegant Femme, a company dedicated to helping women around the world live a life of beauty, travel, and soul. She joins me today to share why she believes it’s so important for women to structure their day around the three core traits that ever woman possesses. She explains what those traits are – which she calls the Femme Types – and how identifying and honoring each of them every day have helped her move out of depression and into a beautiful life she enjoys living.

"If we are not honoring who we really are, that affects us.” – Tara Marino

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • Integrating your human experiences, aligning it with your soul’s calling, and how it can help you overcome obstacles and adversity
  • How journaling has helped Tara through the depression of losing her first child
  • The Femme Types – what they are and why you should honor them every day
  • The “Fo-Types” – what they are and how they counteract the balance of the Femme Types – if you let them
  • What is Femme Flow and what it looks like for Tara
  • Staying disciplined and structuring your day around your Femme Flow
  • Why Tara decided to move to Paris – and how she made her dream a reality
  • The power of saying “little yeses” in the direction of your desires

Tara’s Words of Wisdom:

  1. Slow down and think about the circumstances in your life and how it might assist you in recognizing who you really are. Ask yourself: What if this was to serve me in some way? How would I choose to have it serve me? Really go into that space inside and feel the possibility of expansion.
  2. Ask yourself: What is that dream inside me? You’re here for your unique expression of who you are in the world. Go all the way!
  3. Be truly present and aware of how far you have come. Look around your life and really let it soak in. Celebrate what you have accomplished so far.

The working world has changed drastically over the last 50+ years. In the world that our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents lived and worked, it was common to step out into the work force and maintain the same job and responsibilities until they retired. Today, though, it is much more common for people in the work force to pivot their careers – and even switch the industries in which they work.

My guest today is author, public speaker, and career and business strategist, Jenny Blake. Jenny helps people move past the “burnout” phase and into careers they love. Today, we discuss how to seamlessly and continually double-down on your strengths, interests, and experience to approach career changes from a powerful place. We also discuss how to identify new opportunities that will help you develop new skills and how to run “pilot” experiments to help you figure out what to do next.

“Not all pivots have to be big and dramatic. Sometimes, it’s just about mapping your next move within whatever you’re currently doing.” – Jenny Blake

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • How company pivots have impacted individual and millennial pivots
  • Individual ideas of “what is working” and how it evolved over generations
  • The basis of Jenny’s 4-step framework process
  • Getting traction within your organization for your pilot projects
  • Pilot examples for small business owners and entrepreneurs
  • Dealing with anxiety and a lack of clarity
  • Transitioning from intrapreneur to entrepreneur
  • Recharging habits and routines

Jenny’s 4-Step Pivot Framework:

  1. Step 1 – The Plant Phase – Setting the foundation
  2. Step 2 – Scanning – Looking at what’s out there related to your strengths and one-year vision
  3. Step 3 – Pilot – Small experiments to help you assess the 3 E’s: Enjoyment, Expertise, and Expansion
  4. Step 4 – Launch – The “all-in” moment

Pivoting Questions to Ask Yourself:

  1. What’s already working for me?
  2. What are my strengths?
  3. What are people asking my advice on the most?
  4. What do I enjoy the most?
  5. When do I feel the most “in the zone?”
  6. How am I already earning an income?
  7. Who do I already know?

In episode 151 of the Fierce Feminine Leadership podcast, Amy Jo Kim provided powerful insight from the game design industry on ways you can create innovative ideas and turn them into highly successful products and services. During the conversation, the idea of “killing your darlings” came up numerous times as well as why it’s important to evaluate, assess, and let go of the things that are not working for your project, business, or organization.

Today, I want to discuss what it means to “kill your darlings” and why taking this step is often one of the hardest for many entrepreneurs and female leaders. I also want to share the positive impact that letting go of what’s not working can have on your business or organization once you get past the emotional aspect of “killing your baby” and begin pruning it to perfection as well as share some key questions you should ask to help identify what is working, what’s not working, and what your next steps should be.

When you’re willing to kill off the darlings to preserve the body of strength of your work, you will find that not only do you develop a deeper sense of confidence, but your relationship with your tribe and overall effectiveness is greatly enhanced.

Today on the Fierce Feminine Leadership Podcast:

  • The emotional aspect of killing your darlings
  • Why it’s important to prune what’s not working to make room for things that work
  • Utilizing feedback from “fussy” clients and customers

3 “Darling Killing” Questions You Should Be Asking:

  1. What should you keep doing because it’s working?
  2. What should you stop doing because it is not working?
  3. What should you start doing because it would be even more helpful?
