To many, having a good and balanced work-life and home-life is a dream come true. It’s a “dream” because it is more often unachievable than feasible. But with all the different options a fierce woman has out there, it all boils down to choosing the right strategy so you can have the money, power, and freedom to choose and live the life that you want.

 

Today, I share one of the most significant moves my husband and I made in our careers and our home-life. I discuss how this choice improved not only the quality of our family life and marriage but also my health, my stress level, and how I lead my team. Being a fierce female leader in your industry takes a lot of courage and strength. With this comes great responsibility and the high possibility to be overwhelmed with the constant pressure and what seems to be a list of never-ending tasks. To make things worse, feeling overwhelmed usually comes at a bad time -- when there’s more work on your plate than you usually have.

On this episode, I share an effective tool to conquer overwhelm. I share a simple tactic my clients and I use to cope with overwhelm and explain how to stay productive despite the number of things you want to accomplish. I also share how long you can take a necessary “pause” as your company’s visionary as you discipline yourself to look at the smaller yet attainable tasks on your list.

5 Good Girl Habits to Break 

Habit #1: Finishing your to-do list.  

As you advance, you will almost always have more complex tasks on your to-do list than you can possibly complete.  

Leadership is not about completing your to-do list, it is about deciding what on your to-do list you are going to bring the force of your attention to this day. 

Habit #2: Feeling the need to answer every question.  

She who asks the questions has control. If you are in a conversation and someone asks you a question that threatens to derail the conversation, consider responding with a question. 

Habit #3: Treating everyone equally.  

Triage your meeting requests according to those that line up most powerfully with your priorities. 

Habit #4: Respecting authority.  

Respect your own intentions, and self worth. 

Habit #5: Not playing hooky.  

Give yourself permission once and a while to play hooky. It will do wonders for your creativity.

Women often look for signs before making a life-changing move in their businesses or careers. One of the signs that we look for is the permission or approval from the people around them. While there are many reasons for delaying that big leap, refusing to take action while waiting for the approval or permission of others has led several highly ambitious women to suffer significantly -- wasting their time and effort when they could have been spending it on something that would help them thrive in their career.

We live in a world of increasing uncertainty. This uncertainty is primarily due to how quickly various situations and circumstances can frequently change. It is not uncommon for fast-changing environments to quickly lead fierce feminine leaders to begin feeling overwhelmed and start harboring limiting beliefs, negative self-talk, and paralyzing doubts.

 

So, how do you curb feeling overwhelmed and develop a strategic plan of action when faced with significant uncertainty and increasing change?

 

By thinking and making decisions from a place of solid math rather than a place of high-drama.

Tracking your time can be an effective way to track your productivity. In fact, I often recommend my clients to track their working hours to give them an overview of exactly how productive they are and track how many things they actually do while at work. But have you ever thought about tracking you’re your personal time – the time outside of working for your organization or business? Many people do not realize just how powerful and valuable tracking their non-working hours can be.

I recently experimented with tracking my time, both at work and at home. This experiment has opened my eyes to many lessons about how I spend my time, my true productivity level, and even taught me how much time I actually spend with my family and friends.

In this episode, I’m going to share with you the 5 lessons I have learned after tracking my time over a 14 day period and why you should conduct your own experiment to help you identify where you could improve how you spend your time each week.

  • Bonnie’s wake-up call came early on in her career she was passed over for a promotion because she didn’t position herself properly.

It takes more than great performance to get ahead in business. You need to know how to position yourself, build advocates and build influence across the organization.

 

How can you increase your political savvy?

  • Build a relationship with yourself- take the time to understand how you and your work contributes and adds value to the organization. This is the foundation for you to promote yourself and build influence across the organization.
    • Own your ambition- recognize what it takes to move your career forward and make decisions that support your ambition going forward.
  • Develop an awareness of what is going on around you and what your organization and bosses are trying to achieve
  • Build a network in a strategic way- It’s not only about who is in your network, but it’s also very important that you are selective in how you spend your time. Consider:
    • How powerful is each person in your network?
    • And how strong is your relationship with each of those people?
    • How you can build visibility with the powerful players?
    • Do the people in your network understand how you bring value to the organization?
  • Understand the dynamics of your organization. How are decisions made, who makes the decisions, & who influences the decisions?
    • What does it take to get ahead in your company?
      • Have there been other women who have reached leadership roles? did they have relationships with
      • What kind of assignments did they get?
      • Did they have a sponsor, a mentor, and or a coach?
      • What was their executive presence like?
    • What kind of behavior is condoned in your organization?

 

What can companies do to retain female talent?

  • The underlying problem isn’t addressed- women don’t necessarily want to leave work when they have small children or when they have elderly parents to care for, but they have little choice because there is little flexibility in corporate America to understand and support women throughout the entirety of their career.
  • Don’t make assumptions about what women want and need, ASK them what they need to be successful.
  • Individual women and their companies need to identify ambitious women who want a long-term career and then have an individualized career track that the leaders in their company will be held accountable for.
